Avensis Rain Light Sensor Fault

Hi, I've got a 2010 Toyota Avensis with a gasoline engine and a weird problem. The rain-light sensor seems faulty. I'm getting an error in the memory, the auto-wipe doesn't work when it rains, and neither does the auto headlight control. Even the speedometer dimming isn't working. Plus, the lights are always on. Any ideas?

Whoa, that sounds like a right mess! So, just to be clear, everything was working fine before, and then suddenly all these things started happening at once? Have you checked any fuses or anything basic like that? It's strange that so many seemingly unrelated things are acting up together.

Yeah, it all went haywire at once. I did check the fuses, but they all seem fine. Could a bad sensor really mess with all those different systems?

Okay, fuses are good, that's a start. It's actually quite common on Avensis models of that era, especially if the car's been sitting in the sun a lot. What happens is bubbles form under the gel pad of the windshield that the sensor uses. These bubbles interfere with the sensor's ability to 'see' properly. It's all tied into the car's computer and that's why it cascades. I'd say it's time to have it checked at a workshop.

Thanks for the tip! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on! They said the gel pad was bubbled. They replaced the sensor, and everything's back to normal now. Cost me 62€.
