Good shout, I'll check the wiring harness. Did yours throw the same error code, or show the same symptoms with the tailgate not fully opening?

I can't recall the exact error code now, it was a while ago, but the symptoms were pretty much identical - the tailgate would sometimes open partially, sometimes not at all. Given your symptoms and error code, it does sound similar. If checking the wiring doesn't resolve it, you might want to get it checked out at a workshop.

Cheers. Wiring was indeed the issue, a corroded connector. Cleaned it up, and all good. Cost me 95€ for the connector and some other bits. Appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra a few years back. The automatic tailgate would act up intermittently. Have you checked the wiring harness where it passes from the body to the tailgate? That was a common failure point on mine. I'm not sure if the Avensis is similar, but it might be worth a look. It could be chafed wires or a loose connection. Also, consider the vehicle sensor itself. Is it possible that the sensor needs replacement?
