The mechanic pointed out that the plug connecting to the control unit was the culprit in my case. It had some corrosion and wasn't making a solid connection. He cleaned it up and applied some dielectric grease. If the problem persists, or you're not comfortable doing it yourself, it's best to have a workshop take a look. It cost me 95€, but could save you a lot of headache.

I had a similar issue with my Opel Corsa, though it was a petrol engine. The symptoms were almost identical - persistent engine light and rough idling, even some stalling at low speeds. Have you checked the connections to the control unit? Sometimes, a loose or corroded connector can cause havoc. It might be worth a shot before replacing the whole unit.
