Avventura rough running exhaust smell
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2017 Fiat Avventura experiencing rough running and an exhaust smell, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion was an issue with the exhaust treatment system, possibly involving the NOx sensors, EGR valve, or oxygen sensor. A suggestion was made that a faulty lambda (oxygen) sensor could be causing the problem by disrupting the fuel/air mixture, leading to incomplete combustion and the associated symptoms. After a mechanic's diagnosis, it was confirmed that the lambda sensor was indeed the issue, and replacing it resolved the problem.

Yeah, I scanned it, and it's throwing a generic "exhaust treatment malfunction" code. Not very helpful, is it? So, you really think it's the lambda sensor? How can a faulty sensor cause so many problems at once? I mean, the rough running and the exhaust smell...

Think of it like this: the lambda sensor is the engine's nose. If it's giving the ECU bad information, the whole fuel/air mixture goes haywire. That leads to incomplete combustion, hence the rough running and exhaust smell. The leak just makes everything worse. With a generic code and those symptoms, I'd bet good money on a defective lambda sensor. I'd recommend getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop though.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the help! Turns out you were spot on. Went to a local mechanic, they confirmed it was the lambda sensor causing all the fuss. New sensor, 375€ lighter wallet, and the Avventura is purring like a kitten again.

Sounds like fun. Exhaust leak and a rough idle with the engine light screams lambda (oxygen) sensor to me. They get lazy over time, like an old dog, and cause all sorts of mayhem. Have you tried scanning for any specific error codes? That would be the first step.
