Aygo Engine Trouble Fuel Pump Suspected

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2014 Toyota Aygo with a gasoline engine. It's got 88034 km and recently it's been exhibiting some odd behavior. The engine sometimes refuses to start, and when it does, it occasionally stalls at idle. The check engine light is also on. I've noticed rough engine running and a definite increase in fuel consumption. I scanned for codes and there's an error stored in the memory. I suspect it might be fuel pump related, perhaps a cable or plug connection issue. Any thoughts on what I should check first?

That sounds frustrating. It definitely points towards a fueling issue. Before you start ripping things apart, have you checked the basics like fuel filter condition? A clogged filter can starve the pump and cause similar symptoms. Also, what error code did the scan produce? That code would be a huge help in narrowing down the possibilities. While a fuel pump issue is possible, especially with those symptoms, don't immediately rule out things like a faulty fuel injector or even a bad sensor sending incorrect data to the ECU.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the fuel filter yet, that's a good shout, I'll add it to the list. The error code was P0230, fuel pump primary circuit. Does this specifically confirm the fuel pump issue, or could the filter still be the culprit, along with the fuel injector as you mentioned?

Okay, the P0230 code does strongly suggest an issue within the fuel pump circuit itself. While a clogged filter could, theoretically, put extra strain on the pump and potentially trigger a similar code over time, it's less likely. The code points more directly to a problem with the pump, its wiring, the relay, or the ECU's control of the pump. Given the code and your symptoms, along with the possibility of a defective cable or plug connection you initially mentioned, I'd carefully inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the fuel pump. However, working on the fuel system can be dangerous if you don't have experience. If you're not completely comfortable, your best bet is probably to get it checked out by a qualified workshop.

Thanks a lot for your help! I checked the cable, it seemed ok. I decided to bring it to the workshop. Turned out to be the fuel pump indeed, and they replaced it. The final repair cost me 95€. Now the Aygo runs just fine.
