Aygo gear shift indicator failure

Yeah, it's an automatic. Fluid levels seem okay. I haven't tried disconnecting the battery, so I guess I could give that a shot. But if it's not that, what else could it be? You mentioned something more serious – what were you thinking?

Okay, automatic makes things a bit clearer. If disconnecting the battery doesn't do the trick, then honestly, with all those symptoms pointing to the transmission, it sounds like the control unit for the gearbox might be faulty. Given the age of the car, it wouldn't be entirely surprising. I can't say for sure without proper diagnostics, but I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They can hook it up to a diagnostic tool and pinpoint the exact problem. Could be an expensive fix, unfortunately; potentially around 1000€ if it's the control unit.

Sounds like I'm beat. I was hoping it was something simple, but a faulty control unit makes sense given everything that's happening. I'll take it to a shop and get it checked out. Just got a quote for exactly 1000€, and the mechanic told me that the control unit is indeed defective.

Sounds like a headache. A dead gear indicator and all those shifting problems? Does the transmission feel like it's actually selecting the right gears, or is it just guessing? Is it an automatic? Have you checked the basics, like fluid levels? And, have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit to see if it resets anything? Could be a glitch in the system, but with all those symptoms, I suspect something more serious.
