Aygo Jerking Acceleration

Hey, I'm having some serious issues with my 2006 Toyota Aygo diesel. It's got 104,033 km on the clock and recently it's started jerking when I accelerate. The check engine light is on, and I definitely feel like the engine power is reduced. Sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling, and the engine is running really rough. Oh, and there's a strong exhaust smell too. I scanned the error memory and there was indeed an error stored. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Toyota Aygo diesel with 104,033 km is experiencing jerking during acceleration, reduced engine power, stalling, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, with the check engine light on. The problem is identified as a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, likely due to scorching, affecting the air/fuel mixture. The suggested solution is to inspect the intake manifold for cracks, loose bolts, or a scorched gasket, and ultimately, a workshop visit confirms the intake manifold leak, which is repaired, resolving the issue.

Sounds rough! Reduced power and stalling could be a vacuum leak, messing with your air/fuel mixture. Is it like trying to breathe through a straw when you’re running a marathon? The computer is probably trying to compensate, hence the check engine light. Have you checked for any obvious cracks or disconnections in the air intake system? Maybe spray some starter fluid around the intake manifold while it's running – if the engine revs up, that's a clue you've got a leak there. But be careful with that stuff!

Starter fluid, huh? I'm a bit wary of spraying flammable stuff around a hot engine. But the vacuum leak thing makes sense. Where exactly is the intake manifold on this engine? And is there anything else I should look for besides cracks?

Okay, safety first! The intake manifold is bolted to the engine block, where the air enters the cylinders. Follow the air intake hose from the air filter box; it'll lead you right to it. Besides cracks, check for loose bolts. Think of it like a loose lid on a jar – even a tiny gap lets air escape. Scorching can happen over time due to engine heat, especially around the gasket. A scorched gasket won't seal properly. Honestly, with all those symptoms, it's probably best to get it checked by a workshop before it causes more damage. It could be something simple, but it could also be something more serious, and you don’t want to risk making things worse. A diagnostic check might save you money in the long run.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – the intake manifold was leaking because of scorching! They replaced it, and it cost me a hefty 1180€, but the car's running perfectly now. Really appreciate the help!
