Aygo preheating lamp and check engine light
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Toyota Aygo diesel is experiencing issues with the preheating lamp not switching off and the check engine light staying on, accompanied by excessive smoke during acceleration. The problem is suspected to be related to the glow plugs or the glow control unit. A diagnostic test is recommended to check for error codes, as a faulty cable or plug connection could cause these symptoms. The issue was resolved by repairing a defective cable/plug connection on the glow control unit.

A diagnostic test, okay. I suspected something with the glow plugs, but I wasn't sure. Could a defective cable or plug connection really cause all these problems, like the smoke and the check engine light?

Yes, a faulty connection is a common culprit. With my Megane, a corroded connector to the glow plug control unit caused misfires and triggered the engine light. The smoke is probably from unburnt fuel due to the engine not heating up properly. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop; they can pinpoint the exact issue.

Thanks for the advice! Took it to a workshop, and you were right—it was a defective cable/plug connection on the glow control unit. Cost me 95€ to repair. At least it's sorted now!

Sounds familiar! I had similar symptoms with my old Renault Megane, also a diesel. The heating element was acting up. Have you run a diagnostic test to check for error codes related to the glow plugs or the glow control unit?
