Barchetta control unit errors

Hi, I have a 2000 Fiat Barchetta with a gasoline engine. Recently, I've been getting some weird errors. Sometimes a warning light comes on, or I get a 'service required' message. It's happened a few times that audio or navigation just dies, or the whole control unit seems to freeze up. I plugged in an OBD-II scanner, and it shows an error stored in the memory. Any ideas?

The error code was pretty generic, something like 'Control Module Communication Error'. I haven't checked the cable connections myself. Where exactly is the control unit located, and is it something I could easily inspect without special tools?
