Barchetta Exhaust Treatment Malfunction
Summary of the thread
The owner of a 2002 Fiat Barchetta is experiencing an exhaust treatment malfunction, characterized by a check engine light, rough engine running, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell. Initial checks on the fuel cap and exhaust damage revealed no issues. A suggestion was made to consider a defective lambda sensor as a potential cause, which can disrupt the air/fuel mixture and trigger these symptoms. After taking the car to a workshop, it was confirmed that the lambda sensor was indeed faulty, and replacing it resolved the issues.

A defective lambda sensor? I admit, I haven't checked that yet. Could a faulty sensor really cause all these symptoms? And is it something I could diagnose myself, or would I need specialized equipment?

In my experience, yes, a faulty lambda sensor can trigger all those symptoms. It messes with the air/fuel mixture, causing rough running and emissions problems that light up the check engine light. While you could try testing it with a multimeter, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose it and replace it if needed. Better safe than sorry!

You were spot on! I took my Barchetta to the workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed a defective lambda sensor. They replaced it for 375€, and now the car runs smoothly again. The check engine light is off, and the awful smell is gone. Thank you so much for your valuable insight!

I had similar issues with my 2014 Opel Corsa – engine light, rough running, the works! In my case, it turned out to be a defective lambda sensor. Have you considered that?
