Barchetta Overheating Fan Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Fiat Barchetta is experiencing overheating issues, with the radiator fan not functioning and the check engine light on. Initial checks ruled out fuse problems, leading to suspicions about the fan motor or thermal switch. A similar issue in another vehicle was resolved by replacing a faulty speed sensor, which was preventing the fan from operating. The problem was confirmed to be the speed sensor, which was subsequently replaced, resolving the overheating issue.

Thanks! I'll check it out. But would a bad speed sensor really stop the radiator fan completely, even when the engine is idling and overheating? I'd think it would at least run a little...

That's exactly what happened with my Saab. The sensor controls the fan speed based on the car's speed, and if it fails, the fan just stops. You can replace it yourself or take it to a shop if you're not sure. These new cars can be tricky.

I took it to a workshop, and it was the speed sensor. Cost me around 250€. Thanks again for your help!

I had a similar issue on my old Saab 9-3, but it was the speed sensor causing the fan to malfunction. The engine was running too hot because the car did not realize it needs cooling. Check the sensor, it could be the reason why the fan isn't kicking in.
