Berlingo exhaust back pressure sensor issue

I own a 2020 Citroen Berlingo with a gasoline engine, currently showing 175253 km. Recently, the warning light illuminated, and I have noticed smoke when accelerating. I suspect an exhaust back pressure sensor malfunction. Could this be the cause, given the symptoms?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Citroen Berlingo owner reported a warning light and smoke during acceleration, suspecting an exhaust back pressure sensor issue. The symptoms included a slight power loss and potentially increased fuel consumption. A mechanic confirmed the sensor was defective, and after replacement, the vehicle's performance returned to normal.

The symptoms you describe certainly point towards a problem within the vehicle emissions control system. While a defective exhaust back pressure sensor aligns with those symptoms, it is difficult to say for certain without a diagnostic check. Is the vehicle's performance noticeably affected beyond the smoke and warning light? Have you observed any changes in fuel consumption?

The vehicle does seem to exhibit a slight decrease in overall power, particularly when ascending inclines. As for fuel consumption, I have not meticulously measured it, but it does appear to be somewhat higher than usual. Is there a specific diagnostic procedure I could perform to further isolate the issue?

Given the additional information regarding power loss and potential increased fuel consumption, the defective exhaust back pressure sensor diagnosis seems increasingly plausible. However, without specialized equipment, pinpointing the fault definitively is challenging. It would be best to consult a qualified mechanic for a comprehensive inspection. There are various components to test, and they should be able to give you a firm assessment.

Based on your recommendation, I consulted a trusted mechanic who confirmed the exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective. The repair, including parts and labor, cost approximately 245€. The vehicle is now functioning optimally. Thank you for your assistance.
