I haven't checked anything, to be honest. I'm not sure where the transfer case even is, or what kind of transfer fluid to use. What does oil leakage look like in this case?

Okay, lack of maintenance is a strong indicator. Gearbox slippage plus high mileage often points to defective gears due to oil wear in the transfer case. I'd recommend a workshop visit.

Right, took it to a shop. Turns out it was the transfer case oil wear fault and they said some gears were defective. Cost me 330€, but shifts are smooth again! Thanks for the advice!

Slipping gears on a Berlingo that age could be a few things. Have you checked the transfer fluid level or noticed any oil leakage? When was the last time you changed the gear oil?
