Berlingo high fuel consumption and stalling
Summary of the thread
The 2003 Citroen Berlingo was experiencing high fuel consumption, stalling when idling, and the check engine light was on, accompanied by smoke during acceleration. These symptoms suggested a potential issue with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. After consulting with a mechanic, it was confirmed that the MAF sensor was faulty and needed replacement, which resolved the issues, improving the car's performance.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the air filter, and it seemed okay. Performance has declined a little. If it is the MAF sensor, is it something I can replace myself, or am I better off taking it to a professional?

Given the potential for inaccurate air-fuel ratios resulting from a faulty MAF sensor, leading to further complications, I would advise consulting a qualified workshop. It is important to diagnose it correctly. In my case, the garage confirmed the MAF sensor issue, and I had it replaced.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I took it to a local mechanic, and it turned out to be the MAF sensor. They replaced it, and the total cost was 365€. The car runs much better now!

The symptoms you describe are indeed indicative of a potential mass air flow (MAF) sensor malfunction. A similar issue plagued my old Opel Astra, albeit a diesel version. Have you checked the air filter recently? A clogged filter can sometimes contribute to MAF sensor problems. Also, any noticeable decline in overall performance?
