Berlingo high fuel consumption VANOS issue

My 2010 Citroen Berlingo diesel has a check engine light and higher fuel consumption at 66,000 km. Could this be VANOS-related, like a faulty solenoid, or possibly a timing chain issue?

VANOS failure usually causes low power or misfires. Higher fuel consumption suggests a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, or a power supply issue preventing correct timing adjustment. Check for wiring damage around the solenoid. What error code is the check engine light showing?

I haven't checked the wiring yet, but I will tomorrow. I don't have a code reader. Should I buy one, or just take it to a garage for a professional reading?

A code reader is handy, especially for older cars, but given the potential VANOS issue, a workshop diagnosis is best. Without the code, it's hard to confirm, but it likely involves the inlet VANOS mechanics. I remember a similar Berlingo issue a few years back. The garage fixed the VANOS for 250€.

Thanks, I'll book it in to get the code read and the VANOS system investigated. Hopefully, it's just a solenoid valve. The inlet VANOS mechanics were faulty and needed replacement. It cost 250€ in the end.
