Black smoke and high fuel consumption: possible defect in the diesel particulate filter of a 2010 VW Passat

Hello friends, I have a problem with my 2010 VW Passat Diesel (mileage 263754 km). The car is acting up - black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is constantly on, hardly any power, the engine runs unevenly, increased fuel consumption and the DPF regeneration is not working. Suspicion: Defect in the diesel particulate filter. Have any of you ever had the same problems and how did it go at the mechanic? Experiences and suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 VW Passat Diesel is experiencing black smoke, a constant check engine light, uneven engine performance, and increased fuel consumption, with a suspicion of a defect in the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The symptoms suggest that the DPF regeneration is not functioning properly, potentially requiring a new filter. A similar issue in a 2013 VW Golf was resolved by replacing the DPF, which restored the car's performance. It is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic to confirm the diagnosis and explore repair options.

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2013 VW Golf Diesel. There were also bumpy engine running and crazy indicator lights. At the last workshop visit, it turned out that it was actually the diesel particulate filter. The DPF regeneration didn't work at all. It was a pretty serious matter. A completely new filter was fitted and after a few tests my car was running like clockwork again. Anyway, your suspicions could well be justified. The best thing to do is to take the car to the garage for a quick check. Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Wow, a completely new filter, that sounds really serious. Can you remember how deep you had to dig into your pocket for that? And has anything else popped up since the replacement? It's really valuable to hear your experience because the symptoms sound really similar.

Hello, no problem, always happy to help! The fun cost me €1550. It was quite a hit to my wallet, I'm telling you! It cost quite a lot of money to repair the internal defect in the diesel particulate filter. But since the repair, my Golf has been running like a champ again. The black smoke is gone, the engine runs cleanly and the indicator lights have all gone out. So, long story short: it was worth it, even though it was quite expensive. Hopefully you won't have to dig that deep into your pocket, but if you do, I can assure you it will be better afterwards. Good luck, buddy!

Great, that sounds like a real adventure with your car! Of course, €1550 is a lot of money. But if your Golf runs smoothly again afterwards, then maybe it would be worth the investment for my Passat too. Of course, I hope it won't be that expensive, but who knows. I'd better make an appointment at the garage and hope for the best. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be something else. If you have any other tips, let me know. Many thanks for your help. You've really helped me!

Ladies and Gentlemen, An error has occurred in my Audi A6 4G model year 2014. The error relates to the efficiency of the particulate filter bank 1, which is below the threshold. Thank you in advance for your further help. With best regards

Start by checking if the DPF is clogged or if there are any leaks in the exhaust system. You can also try a forced regeneration if your vehicle supports it. If the issue persists, it might be necessary to inspect the sensors related to the DPF system. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
