Black smoke and loss of power in 2013 Toyota Hilux diesel: suspected diesel particulate filter defect

Hey guys, I drive a 2013 Toyota Hilux Diesel with 75718km and seem to have a problem. When accelerating it smokes black from the exhaust, the check engine light is on, engine performance is worse, doesn't run smoothly and fuel consumption has increased. In addition, the DPF regeneration no longer seems to be working properly. My last visit to the garage was not a good experience and I suspect a defect in the diesel particulate filter. Have any of you had similar symptoms in your vehicle or can you tell me what I might have to expect in terms of repair costs? Thank you and stay healthy!

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Toyota Hilux Diesel is experiencing black smoke, loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light, with suspected issues in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process. These symptoms suggest a potential defect in the DPF, which can lead to poor engine performance and increased emissions. A similar case with a 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser involved replacing the defective DPF and reprogramming the engine control unit, which resolved the issues. Addressing the DPF problem is crucial for restoring vehicle performance and efficiency.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser. Black smoke, poor engine performance and high fuel consumption, it was all there. Turns out my diesel particulate filter was defective on the inside. It was definitely not that easy to deal with. After several inspections and tests, the garage removed the old DPF and fitted a new one. The engine control unit was also reprogrammed so that the regeneration worked correctly again. It was quite a job, but afterwards the car ran like new again. It is definitely a problem that needs to be fixed properly. Hopefully this has helped you a little. Stay true to yourself!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Your experience sounds exactly like the problems I'm having with my Hilux now. Can you remember how much you paid for the repairs? And have you had any other problems with your Land Cruiser since the repairs? Thanks again and stay well!

Hey, no problem! Well, to be honest, the repair was a bit expensive. I paid a total of about 1550€ to repair the defective diesel particulate filter. But I have to say it was worth it, I haven't had any further problems with my Land Cruiser since. Everything is running smoothly again, the smoke has stopped and fuel consumption is also back to normal. So, despite the cost, I would say it's important to keep the DPF in good condition. Hope that helps you a little. Take good care of yourself and stay healthy!

Oh boy, €1550 is indeed a lot of money. But it sounds like it was money well spent. I'm a little comforted by your findings, especially that you haven't had any further problems since the repair. I'll probably make an appointment at another garage soon. Maybe they have more experience with DPF problems there. Thanks for your advice and help! Take care of yourself and stay healthy!
