Black smoke and loss of power in a 2017 LandCruiser - experience and workshop tips wanted

Hi guys, my 2017 LandCruiser (gasoline, 39606 km) has problems. Recently, there is black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, it starts poorly, especially when cold, the engine runs rough and loses power, and it jerks when accelerating. Sometimes it won't start, stalls when idling and the engine vibrates when stationary. I think it could be a problem with the mixture preparation. Has anyone had similar problems and can comment? And how did it go at the workshop? My last experience there was not so great... Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2017 LandCruiser is experiencing black smoke during acceleration, a check engine light, rough idling, poor starting, and power loss. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the fuel mixture preparation. A similar case involved a faulty fuel pressure regulator, which, once replaced, resolved the issues. It is recommended to have the vehicle checked at a reliable garage to diagnose and address the problem effectively.

Hello, I can exactly understand your problem. I recently had exactly the same symptoms with my 2016 GLE. The diagnosis was a defective fuel pressure regulator. The check engine light was constantly on, there was also black smoke when accelerating and the engine was running rough. The car also started poorly and lost power. The guys at the garage then replaced the faulty fuel pressure regulator and everything has been running smoothly again ever since. It was a serious problem, certainly not something to be taken lightly, especially as the car loses power and fuel consumption increases as a result. But after the fuel pressure regulator was replaced, everything was fine again. Hope that helps you. Have it checked at a good garage. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply and the information. It's scary that exactly the same symptoms happened to your car. Quite reassuring, though, that it was only a matter of replacing the fuel pressure regulator and everything ran smoothly again afterwards. Do you happen to remember roughly how much it cost you? And have there been any after-effects or further problems since the replacement? Thanks again and best regards!

Hello, I'm glad that my answer was helpful to you! After the fuel pressure regulator was replaced, the car actually ran perfectly again. The replacement cost me about 250 euros, but since then there have been no after-effects or additional problems. The thing with the mixture preparation, which you suspected, was fortunately no longer an issue. After the visit to the workshop, the fault was rectified and I haven't had any problems since. I hope everything goes smoothly for you too! Good luck and let me know how it goes! Best regards!

Hello, your answer really helped me. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. The cost of the repair seems reasonably manageable and it's great that you haven't had any further problems since. I will now make an appointment at the garage and follow your advice. Glad it's probably not the mixture treatment. I'll keep you posted on how I get on. Thanks again and best regards!
