Black smoke and loss of power in Mercedes Sprinter Diesel 2011: Questions about DPF regeneration and exhaust gas recirculation

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Loud hissing on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I'm currently having some problems with my 2011 Mercedes Sprinter Diesel, 166049 km run. While driving, it emits black smoke and I notice a strong exhaust odor. It also loses engine power and there is a loud hissing noise when accelerating. The check engine light is on and I get a message that the DPF regeneration has failed. I suspect that the exhaust gas recirculation function is faulty. I had a bad experience with my last garage and would now like to hear your opinion. Has anyone had similar problems? What was your experience at the garage? Many thanks in advance! Greetings.

Hello, I once had similar symptoms with my 2014 Mercedes Vito Diesel. Damaged cables on the electric changeover valve were the culprit. The error messages and the exhaust smell sound pretty similar to what I had with mine. It was a serious problem because it affected the whole exhaust system, and it was quite annoying to hear those loud hissing noises and see the black smoke every time I accelerated. At the garage they replaced the damaged cable and after that everything ran smoothly again. Just had to wait a while for the replacement parts to be delivered. Hope that helps a little. Of course, it's always a shame if you've had a bad experience, but you should really go to a professional for things like this. All the best! Best regards.

Hey, thanks for the tip about the electric changeover valve, I'll have a closer look at that. Do you remember how much it cost you at the garage? Did anything else happen after the repair, i.e. did more problems pop up or was everything really fine again afterwards? Greetings back and thank you!

Hey, sure enough, once the mechanic had finished with the electric changeover valve and the damaged cables had been replaced, everything worked like clockwork again. The problematic function of the exhaust gas recirculation was also resolved. Fortunately, I was spared any further problems. The repair cost me €155 at the time. I felt it was a fair price, especially as everything ran smoothly again afterwards! I hope this helps you and you'll soon be able to rev up your Sprinter again! Greetings back and good luck!

Hey, thanks for your detailed answers and the price quote. That gives me real hope that the problem with my Sprinter is manageable and won't be so expensive. I'm going to call the garage right now and make an appointment. With a bit of luck, I'll soon be back on the road without black smoke and hissing noises. Thanks again for your help! Greetings.
