Black smoke and loss of power in Peugeot 108 - Possible fuel pump defect?

Hey guys! I've recently started having problems with my 2016 Peugeot 108, diesel, with just over 100,000 km on the clock. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on and the engine even shuts itself off sometimes. The engine's performance decreases, it runs unevenly, twitches when accelerating and the fuel consumption is quite high. I have also noticed a strong exhaust smell and sometimes it dies at idle. I suspect a fault with the fuel pump. Have any of you had similar experiences? How did it go with your mechanic? Unfortunately, my last experience wasn't that great... Can you give me any tips? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Peugeot 108 is experiencing black smoke from the exhaust, a check engine light, engine shutdowns, uneven performance, and high fuel consumption. These symptoms suggest a possible defect in the fuel pump. A similar issue in a Peugeot 208 was resolved by replacing the fuel pump module, which restored the car's performance. It is recommended to consult a mechanic to confirm the diagnosis and consider replacing the fuel pump module as a potential solution.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, had a similar problem with my 2013 Peugeot 208, diesel with a little over 80,000 km. In my case, it was also the fuel pump module that was defective. Really annoying, the part caused similar symptoms to yours. I also had this black smoke and a stuttering engine. The mechanic told me it was a serious problem. Not immediately life threatening to the car, but something that definitely needs to be fixed to prevent further damage. Like you, the check engine light came on and the engine's performance diminished for me too. It was really frustrating. The guy at the garage replaced the module and the car ran perfectly again. Hope this helps you. All the best!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! I have also observed exactly these symptoms. Do you happen to remember how much it cost to replace the fuel pump module? And were there any other problems after the repair, or has everything been running smoothly again since then? Thanks for your help!

Hey, no problem! I'm glad I can help. So, I had to shell out 640 euros to replace the fuel pump module. Not exactly cheap, but it sorted out all the problems. Since I visited the mechanic, the car has been running like clockwork again and the fuel pump fault was completely fixed. So you could look at that as a possible solution. I hope this helps you, let me know if anything is still unclear. All the best!

Great, that really helps me! 640 euros is quite a lot, but if it solves all the problems, then it's definitely worth it. Thanks for the information, I'll discuss it with my mechanic now. How good that there are helpful people like you. Wish you a safe journey! Thanks again!
