Black smoke and power loss in 2009 VW Passat Diesel
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2009 VW Passat Diesel is experiencing black smoke, power loss, and a "Check Engine" light, with concerns about the diesel particulate filter (DPF) being heavily loaded and not regenerating properly. The issues could be due to a faulty DPF, as similar symptoms were resolved by replacing the DPF in another vehicle. The suggested solution is to have the DPF checked and potentially replaced to restore performance and eliminate the smoke and smell issues.

Hey, your answer takes away some of my worries, thanks for that! It's really good to know that your car ran smoothly again after replacing the DPF. Do you have any idea how much the replacement cost you? And were there any other problems afterwards or was that the only big thing? I would be delighted if you could share your experiences with me. Many thanks!

Hey, I'm glad I could ease your worries a little! Uh, yes, replacing the diesel particulate filter actually cost me €1550. I know that's a lot of money, but since then the car has been running like a dream again. Diesel particles were defective due to high mileage, so that was my main problem. Once that was fixed in the workshop, there were no other major issues. At least so far. So I can really only advise you to have it checked and not to worry - after that it's just pure driving pleasure! Hopefully this will help you. Thanks back and good luck!

Thank you very much for the information! That reassures me a little, even if it's not a small sum of course. But I think it's worth the investment if the car runs well again afterwards. I'll probably take my Passat to the garage and hope that it runs as well as you did. Thanks again for your help and advice! See you then!

Hi, I completely understand your concerns. I had similar problems with my 2012 VW Passat. I basically experienced the same symptoms as you: black smoke, reduced performance and a funny exhaust smell. After taking the car to the garage, I was confirmed that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was faulty due to high mileage. It was found that the DPF was heavily loaded and the regeneration was no longer working properly. This meant that the DPF had to be replaced. I have to admit that it was a serious problem and definitely not one to ignore. Although replacing the filter was no small task, the car ran like new again afterwards and the problems were solved. I hope this helps you a little. And don't worry, you're not alone with this problem. All the best!
