Black Smoke & Power Loss: Mitsubishi Injector Crisis?

Hey everyone, my 2012 Mitsubishi Proudia is acting up with multiple symptoms, black exhaust smoke, poor start-up, power loss, and rough idling with occasional stalls. The engine light is on too. I suspect it might be an injector issue, but I'd like to hear from people who've dealt with similar problems. What was the actual cause in your case, and how did your mechanic fix it? What kind of costs should I expect? Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2014 Mitsubishi Galant (I have some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff). The symptoms were exactly like what you're describing, the black smoke and rough idle were especially annoying! Turned out it was indeed a faulty fuel injector. My trusted mechanic diagnosed it and found one injector was internally defective. Got it replaced and the whole thing, including labor, set me back about 515 Euro. Car's been running smooth as silk since then. Can you share your current mileage and whether you've had any recent fuel system maintenance? This info would help determine if your case is similar to what I experienced. Also, have you noticed any unusual fuel consumption lately?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 145,873 KM and had my last service about 4 months ago. Yeah, I've definitely noticed my fuel consumption has gone up lately, been filling up way more often than usual. The black smoke's been getting worse too, especially during cold starts. I'll get it checked out by a mechanic soon. Hopefully it won't cost me too much more than what you paid!

Hey again! Yeah, those symptoms you're describing, especially the increased fuel consumption and worsening black smoke, sound exactly like what I dealt with on my Galant before getting it fixed. My car was actually around the same mileage (about 150k km) when the injector went bad. The increased fuel consumption was one of the biggest red flags for me too. I remember filling up like crazy, was probably wasting at least 15-20% more fuel than usual! Quick tip from my experience, when my mechanic replaced the faulty injector, he recommended doing a full fuel system cleaning too. I went for it and it really helped improve the overall performance. The total came to about 650 Euro with the cleaning included, but honestly, it was worth every cent considering how much I was wasting on extra fuel. Just be careful not to wait too long to get it fixed. I made that mistake and drove around with the symptoms for a couple weeks, which apparently could've caused more damage. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! PS: Make sure your mechanic checks all the injectors while they're at it. Sometimes when one goes bad, others might not be far behind, especially at our mileage.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! That's really helpful about the fuel system cleaning, I'll definitely ask about that when I take it in. You've convinced me not to put this off any longer, especially since I'm probably wasting more money on extra fuel anyway. I'll make an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow and have them check all the injectors like you suggested. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's made me feel a lot better about what I'm dealing with. Will update you once I get it sorted! Thanks again for all the help!
