Black smoke, power loss and high fuel consumption in 2008 VW Passat gasoline engine
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2008 VW Passat gasoline engine is experiencing black smoke, power loss, high fuel consumption, and a strong exhaust odor, potentially due to a fault in the mixture control. A similar issue in a VW Golf Diesel was resolved by fixing a leak in the intake tract, which was causing the mixture to be too lean. The suggested solution is to check for a similar intake leak in the Passat, which could potentially resolve the problem.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I have to say, my old Passat has already covered 178914 km, but has been serviced regularly. Anyway, I don't have the VIN to hand at the moment as the car is at my parents'. But I'll ask my garage if they also think there's a leak in the intake tract. For 425 euros the problem would hopefully be solved. Thanks again, buddy!

Hi, it's great that you were so open with my description of the problem. I will point out all the points you mentioned at the garage and hope that my Passat will have a similar problem to your Golf. Your experience has definitely given me courage. If there is any news, I will definitely let you know. See you then and thanks again for your help, buddy!

Hey, no problem! Yes, it can happen with the mileage. It's always good if you can point out certain things to your garage. So, take courage and ask them directly about the leak in the intake system. It could be that the mixture is too lean as a result. That was certainly the case with my Golf Diesel. And since the repair, my car has been running perfectly and all the problems have disappeared. Keep your fingers crossed that the culprit in your Passat will also be found quickly and that everything will be back to normal for the 425 euros. Keep me posted, we're in this together, buddy!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2006 VW Golf Diesel. I only have some experience with cars, so I was in the same situation as you. My garage was able to trace the problem back to a leak in the intake tract - just like your Passat, it could be making the mixture too lean. The repair cost me 425 euros, but it solved the problem and my car runs like new again. Luckily I only had the problem once and it hasn't happened again since. Do you have the VIN of your Passat to hand? With the vehicle details I might be able to give you more details on how to solve my problem.
