Yes, I've noticed erratic engine RPM surges, especially at higher speeds. And I have seen a slight drop in fuel economy, though I didn't think much of it at first. Does that change your diagnosis?

That engine surging and lower fuel economy really points to a bad torque converter. With symptoms this bad, get it professionally diagnosed and repaired at a good shop. Driving it like this could cause more damage.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'll get it inspected and repaired at a trusted shop. The estimated repair cost is 2120€.

Sounds like a torque converter. Does the engine RPM surge erratically, especially when trying to hold a steady speed on the highway? Have you seen any changes in fuel economy lately?
