BMW 1 Misfire Issue After Coil and Spark Plug Replacement

I own a 2013 BMW 1 with a gasoline engine and 123,000 miles on the clock. I'm experiencing an unsteady engine and getting a misfire on cylinders 1-3. I recently changed all 6 coils and spark plugs, but this did not resolve the issue. Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 BMW 1 is experiencing misfires in cylinders 1-3 despite recent replacement of coils and spark plugs. Possible causes include vacuum leaks, fuel injector issues, or internal engine problems. Suggested solutions involve checking for vacuum leaks, inspecting fuel injectors, and conducting a compression test, which revealed low compression in cylinder 3, indicating a potential internal engine issue. Further investigation into wiring and the engine control unit (ECU) is recommended to address misfires in cylinders 1 and 2.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Check for vacuum leaks, as they can cause misfires and rough idling. Inspect hoses and connections for any cracks or disconnections. Let me know if this helps or if you have further questions!

I urgently need help. I have a BMW e87 118i with 140,000 km on it. It started with my car running extremely rough every morning and then stalling when stationary, after which the check engine light came on. If I warmed it up a bit and started it several times, it was better. I scanned it and it showed numerous errors, such as misfires cylinder 4, lambda control, oil pressure control and a few more errors. Now I have changed all 4 spark plugs and ignition coils and it hasn't helped. I really don't know where to go from here. Can someone help me?

Start by checking the condition of the fuel injectors, as clogged or malfunctioning injectors can cause misfires and rough running. Consider using a fuel injector cleaner or having them professionally cleaned. If the problem persists, it might be worth inspecting the fuel pressure and the condition of the fuel pump. Keep me updated on your progress or if you have further questions!

Update to my 2013 128i. I have changed plugs and coils, confirmed vanos solenoids are working correctly, moved fuel injectors around, but I am still getting faults for misfire in cylinders 1-3. I just completed a compression test with the following results: #1-210psi,#2-212psi,#3-105psi, #4-180psi, #5-220psi, #6-215psi. Fearing the worst here…anyone have any thoughts?

The low compression in cylinder #3 suggests a potential internal engine issue, such as a damaged valve, piston ring, or head gasket. It's crucial to address this promptly, as it can lead to further engine damage. I recommend having a professional mechanic perform a leak-down test to pinpoint the exact cause. Please keep me updated on your findings or if you have more questions!

I don’t disagree, but it doesn’t explain the misfire in cylinders 1 & 2…

Check the wiring harness and connectors for cylinders 1 and 2 for any signs of damage or corrosion, as electrical issues can also cause misfires. If everything looks fine, consider checking the engine control unit (ECU) for any faults. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!
