Shaking while idling

Hey all! Having some concerning issues with my 2022 BMW 1 Series diesel (27k km). The car's been jerking during acceleration and running really rough. Engine's in limp mode, throwing a check engine light, and there's a strong exhaust smell. Power feels significantly reduced and it sometimes stalls at idle. My gut tells me it might be the intake manifold, but I had a sketchy experience with my last mechanic and want to hear from others. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? How much did the repair cost you, and would you recommend any reliable mechanics who know their way around BMWs? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Your symptoms sound very familiar. I had nearly identical issues with my 2019 BMW 3 Series diesel about 8 months ago. The rough running, jerking, and that distinct exhaust smell were spot on with what I experienced. In my case, it was indeed the intake manifold. The scorching had caused cracks, leading to vacuum leaks and uneven air distribution. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it was affecting engine performance and could've led to more damage if left unchecked. The repair involved replacing the entire intake manifold assembly and cleaning the related components. The garage also had to reset the engine management system to clear the adaptations. I was without my car for three days while they sorted it out. Based on your description, I'd say you're on the right track suspecting the intake manifold. These symptoms are pretty textbook for that issue on modern BMW diesels. Make sure you get it checked soon, running it in this condition isn't doing your engine any favors. Best of luck with the repair.

Hey, you're spot on about the intake manifold. The symptoms matched my case exactly, had that problem with my Beemer last year. The mechanics did a great job fixing it, and it's been running smoothly since. I'm just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working fine afterward, or have you noticed any other quirks? It'd be good to know what to watch out for, just in case.

Hey! Yeah, I remember sharing my intake manifold saga. Got it all sorted now, had the repair done and it cost me 1180 € to fix that pesky scorching issue that was causing the leak. Money well spent though, as my 3 Series is running like a dream now! Haven't had a single problem since the repair, honestly. The jerking, rough running, and that nasty exhaust smell, all gone. It's like driving a different car. The mechanic did a proper job fixing it, and I'm really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it sorted. Just keep an eye on your engine performance and if you notice any changes in how it runs, get it checked right away. But from my experience, once the intake manifold is properly fixed, you shouldn't have any more trouble. My car's been smooth sailing for months now! Hope this helps ease your mind a bit about the repair!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I finally got my BMW back from the shop yesterday after dealing with that intake manifold issue. Cost me about 1250 €, a bit more than yours but worth every penny. The mechanic was fantastic and really took the time to explain everything. You wouldn't believe the difference! The car's running incredibly smooth now, no more jerking or rough idle. That horrible exhaust smell is completely gone too. Feel like I've got a brand new car! The mechanic also gave it a thorough check and said everything else looks great. Funny how we had such similar experiences with our BMWs. Really appreciate you helping me figure this out. It's always nerve-wracking dealing with car issues, but having someone who's been through the same thing made it much easier to handle. And you're right, keeping an eye on engine performance is key. I'll definitely be more proactive with maintenance from now on. Thanks again for all your help!
