BMW 1 Series petrol 2008: Black smoke, engine problems and increased fuel consumption
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The 2008 BMW 1 series is experiencing issues such as black smoke during acceleration, an illuminated engine light, sudden engine shut-offs, power loss, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and a strong exhaust smell. The owner suspects the fuel injection pressure might be the cause. A fellow BMW owner suggests that the fuel pump could be the issue, especially considering the vehicle's mileage and the fact that the fuel pump has never been replaced. The recommendation is to have the vehicle checked at a garage, specifically focusing on the fuel pump.

Hi, thanks for your tip! My BMW has already run 156871 km and the last service was last year, but a fuel pump change has never been carried out. Yes, it is a gasoline engine. Your idea of having it checked out at the garage sounds pretty good. Maybe they should check the pump. Thanks again for the tip, I hope that solves the problem!

Hello again! At over 150k kilometers it is quite possible that the fuel pump is slowly giving up the ghost, especially if it has never been changed. BMW normally recommends changing it every 100k kilometers. So I would definitely suggest that you have it checked at the garage and possibly replaced. If that's the culprit, that should fix most of your problems. The symptoms certainly fit the bill. I hope this helps you and the replacement solves the problem! Good luck and give us an update when you know more. You're welcome and keep it coming!

Hey, thanks for the additional info and the recommendation! It's a good point that BMW suggests changing it every 100k kilometers. I've obviously missed something. I'll definitely go to the garage and have the fuel pump checked and replaced if necessary. I hope that solves my problems. When I know more, I'll let you know. Thanks again for the help and your time, that's really great of you. Take care!

I have a white adapter of the 2nd generation, it does not work properly on my BMW 120d F40. I get the message that I need the newer model. Could that be the case? LG Sasha

Hi mate, I had a similar problem with my 2006 BMW 3 series, I only have some experience with cars but I know this particular fault pretty well. My car reacted the same as yours and the fuel pump had to be replaced. It was confirmed to me by my garage and they fixed it. It cost me around 640 euros. So far, I was able to solve the problem by visiting the garage. They read out the codes and confirmed my suspicion about the fuel pump. I would say just have it checked out. How many kilometers does your car have on the odometer and when was the last time the fuel pump was changed? Is it a gasoline or diesel? This could help us to provide more details and help you further.
