BMW 2 Diesel Won't Start, Symptoms Point to Ignition Issue

Thanks for sharing! My situation seems different though. I just had my latest service done and everything's fine with the fuses, mechanic checked them all. Currently at 48524 KM, and the weird part is that it only happens after the engine's been running for a while. The dash shows no warning lights at all, which makes it even more puzzling. Starting to think it might be a fuel pump issue since it's more related to when the engine's warm. Has anyone dealt with fuel pump problems on these models?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up since your symptoms sound really familiar but different from my initial fuse problem guess. After you mentioned the warm engine issue, it reminded me of what happened next with my BMW. Actually, my fuse replacement didn't completely solve the problem. After about two weeks, I started getting similar symptoms again, but like yours, mainly when the engine was warm. Turned out I had two separate issues, and the second one was indeed the fuel pump! The fuel pump repair cost me around 800 bucks total, but it was totally worth it. The symptoms disappeared completely after that. The tricky part was that the pump would work fine when cold but start acting up once everything got hot. That's why it was hard to diagnose at first. Quick tip though, before you go replacing the whole pump, have your mechanic check the fuel pressure when the engine's both cold and hot. On my 3 series, they found the pressure would drop significantly after about 15-20 minutes of running. That's what confirmed it was definitely the pump failing. Really hope this helps! Let me know what you find out, always curious to learn more about these issues since they can be so tricky to diagnose.

Thanks so much for that detailed reply about the fuel pump! You've basically described my situation perfectly, especially that part about it working fine when cold but acting up once warm. Just got off the phone with my mechanic, and he agrees we should do the fuel pressure test. Actually booked it in for tomorrow morning. What you said about the repair cost helps too, gives me a rough idea of what to expect if it turns out to be the same issue. It's annoying to have to spend that much, but honestly, if it fixes these unusual shutoffs, it'll be worth every penny. I've had a couple of close calls with the car dying in traffic, and that's just not something I want to risk anymore. I'll definitely keep you posted on what they find. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me feel a lot less worried about what might be wrong. At least now I know there's likely a straightforward fix, even if it's not the cheapest one!

Hey! Got some experience with cars, and I had a very similar issue with my 2015 BMW 3 diesel. Super frustrating when it happened! Had the exact same symptoms on mine, unusual shutoffs, rough running, and starting problems. Took it to my regular workshop, and turns out it was just a blown fuse in the ignition circuit. Pretty simple fix actually, paid 52 Euro for the replacement and labor. The mechanic showed me the burnt fuse, and everything's been running perfectly since then. Before we jump to conclusions though, could you share some more details? Like any warning lights on the dash? Also, when was the last time you had any electrical work done on the car? These details would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had. If it's not the fuse, might want to check out the 4 series forums too, those models share a lot of the same components with yours.
