BMW 2 Diesel: Boost Issues Causing Multiple Problems?

Thanks for your input! My car's at 182,583 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. Actually, I have noticed some black smoke, especially when accelerating hard, and yes, the symptoms definitely get worse after the engine warms up. Your wastegate valve suggestion makes a lot of sense given what I'm experiencing. Did you also notice if your fuel consumption went up before getting it fixed? Mine's been terrible lately, and I'm filling up way more often than usual. Also, did you have any trouble getting the parts for the repair when you had yours fixed? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for if it turns out to be the same issue.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely, the fuel consumption on my BMW was through the roof before I got the wastegate valve fixed! I was literally stopping for fuel every few days when it used to last me much longer. It's one of those things that really hits you in the wallet twice, both at the pump and then with the repair bill. And about the parts, I actually got lucky because my workshop had dealt with this issue before on similar models, so they had the parts readily available. But I've heard from other BMW owners that sometimes there can be a short wait for these specific components. My advice would be to call ahead to your workshop and check their parts availability before booking it in. Looking at your mileage and symptoms, it's sounding more and more like what I dealt with. That black smoke you mentioned is a real telltale sign, had the exact same thing with mine. Just don't wait too long to get it fixed though. I made that mistake and drove around with the issue for a few weeks, which ended up causing some extra wear on other components. Let me know what you find out when you get it checked. Always interested to hear how these things turn out, especially since our cars are so similar!

Thanks so much for the detailed information and advice! You've definitely convinced me to get this sorted sooner rather than later. Just called my regular workshop and they can fit me in next Tuesday. Fortunately, they said they should be able to get the wastegate valve parts within a couple of days if that turns out to be the problem. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, especially the warning about not waiting too long. I was tempted to keep driving it for a while, but hearing about the potential for additional damage has changed my mind. The fuel costs alone are killing me anyway, so fixing it now makes more sense. I'll update you after the repair to let you know if it was indeed the same issue. These BMWs might be fantastic to drive when they're running right, but they sure can be temperamental sometimes! Thanks again for all your help with this.

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars, nothing professional but I've dealt with my share of issues. Had a very similar problem with my 2018 BMW 1 Series diesel last year. Those symptoms you're describing are exactly what I experienced, the power loss and that annoying whistling noise were driving me crazy! After getting it diagnosed, turned out to be a faulty wastegate valve. Got it fixed at my regular workshop, set me back about 860 Euro including parts and labor. Before we dig deeper into potential solutions, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your car? Have you noticed any black smoke from the exhaust? Does the problem get worse when the engine is warm? This could help confirm if you're dealing with the same issue I had. BMW X1 and X2 owners from that generation have reported similar problems too.
