BMW 2 Series Fuel Gauge Dead: Sensor Issue Solution?

Hey there! Having some trouble with my 2022 BMW 2 Series (173,815 km, gas engine). The fuel gauge is stuck, check engine light is on, and the engine keeps stalling when idling. Scanner shows a fuel level sensor error. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Looking for recommendations on reliable mechanics who know their way around BMWs. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2022 BMW 2 Series with a non-functional fuel gauge, a check engine light, and stalling issues. The problem was identified as a fuel level sensor error, potentially caused by a blown fuse and corroded wiring in the fuel pump circuit. The suggested solution involves replacing the fuse, cleaning the connections, and repairing any damaged wiring. It is recommended to consult a BMW specialist for accurate diagnosis and repair, as these electrical issues can be complex.

Hey! I had very similar issues with my 2019 BMW 4 Series last month. My fuel gauge was acting up and the engine would stall at idle. The scanner showed the same fuel level sensor error code. Initially thought it was just a faulty sensor, but turned out there was a blown fuse and some wiring issues in the fuel pump circuit. The connectors had corroded over time, causing intermittent electrical problems. The mechanic replaced the fuse, cleaned the connections, and repaired some damaged wiring. It wasn't a major repair but definitely needed proper diagnosis to fix it right. I'd skip general repair shops and find someone who specializes in BMWs. These electrical issues can be tricky to diagnose if the mechanic isn't familiar with the system. The issue hasn't come back since the repair. Keep in mind that with those symptoms, it could also be the fuel pump starting to fail, so get it checked soon before you end up stranded somewhere. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Can't believe it ended up being the fuse and wiring, would've never guessed that. Mind sharing how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then? Just want to make sure there weren't any surprise issues that popped up later.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely happy to share! Since I got it fixed last month, the car has been running perfectly, no more fuel gauge issues or stalling. The Fuel level sensor fault was completely resolved. The total bill came to 52 € for replacing the blown fuse and cleaning up those corroded connections. Pretty reasonable considering I was worried it might be something much more serious like the fuel pump! The mechanic mentioned these electrical gremlins are actually quite common in BMWs, especially when the connections get exposed to moisture over time. But once it's properly fixed, it tends to stay fixed. I've put about 3,000 km on it since the repair and haven't had a single problem. Just make sure whoever works on it knows their way around BMW electrical systems. The diagnostic part is really what matters most with these kinds of issues. Let me know how it goes when you get yours sorted!

Thanks for all the details! That's such a relief to hear it was a relatively inexpensive fix and that your car's been running great since then. I've been stressing about potentially needing to replace the entire fuel pump, which would've been a much bigger expense. Just took my car to a BMW specialist yesterday based on your advice. You were spot on, they found similar issues with corroded wiring and a blown fuse. The repair cost was a bit higher at 75 €, but still way better than what I was expecting. They also cleaned up some other connections while they were at it. Got it back today and it's running like new, no more stalling, fuel gauge is working perfectly, and the check engine light is finally off! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Saved me from a lot of unnecessary worry and helped me find the right fix. Will definitely keep an eye on those electrical connections from now on. Thanks again for all your help!
