Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got the same exact issue with my 2016 2 Series (currently at 150155 KM). Mine doesn't make any unusual sounds, but it just stops mid-way whether opening or closing. I ran a diagnostic scan and got error code P0748, but haven't had a chance to take it to a shop yet since my last service. Your wiring harness story gives me hope it might be something simple rather than a full sensor replacement. Did you notice any visible damage to the wiring before getting it checked? I might take a closer look at mine this weekend, though I'm not too handy with electrical stuff.

Hey again! Looking at your error code and symptoms, it does sound really similar to what I experienced with my BMW. When I had my issue, I actually didn't notice any visible damage to the wiring at first glance, but when the mechanic really got in there, he found that the insulation had worn through in a spot where the harness flexes with the tailgate movement. Just want to mention though, my repair was pretty straightforward, but with your higher mileage (mine was around 120K when this happened), it might be worth having them check the entire harness while they're at it. These things tend to wear out over time with all that opening and closing. One quick thing you could try before taking it in, check if the tailgate movement is smooth when you operate it manually. In my case, there was no resistance, which helped point to an electrical rather than mechanical issue. If you're planning to look at it yourself this weekend, just be super careful with the wiring connectors. They can be pretty delicate, and I learned that the hard way when I first tried poking around! Let me know what you find, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue as mine.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! I just went out and checked the tailgate movement manually like you suggested, it's actually pretty smooth, which makes me more confident it's probably electrical like yours was. That's a really good point about checking the whole harness given my higher mileage. Honestly, after hearing about your experience with the connectors, I think I'll skip my weekend investigation and just book it in with my mechanic next week. Don't want to risk making things worse by messing with those delicate connections! Your insight about the wear and tear from constant movement makes total sense too. Better to get it all checked properly while they're in there. I'll definitely update once I know what the actual issue is. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped me understand what I might be dealing with!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW 1 Series diesel. I have some experience working on cars but nothing too advanced. My tailgate was acting up the same way, and initially, I thought it was the motor. Took it to my regular workshop, and it turned out to be a loose connection in the wiring harness going to the tailgate sensor. The mechanic found a damaged plug that was causing intermittent connectivity issues. Total repair cost was 95 Euro, mainly labor for diagnosing and fixing the connection. What's the exact error code you're getting? Also, does your tailgate make any unusual noises when trying to operate it? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Not sure if you've tried the BMW 4 Series forum as well, those guys often have great insights since many components are shared across the lineup.
