BMW 3 Hybrid Battery Woes: Multiple Systems Failing

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2020 BMW 3 Hybrid (115,886 km). Getting multiple electrical errors on the dash, and the start-stop system isn't working properly. The car struggles to start sometimes, suggesting battery issues. I suspect it might be the auxiliary battery causing these problems. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm looking for advice from those who've dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this? Where did you get it fixed, and what was the actual problem? Thanks in advance for any help!

I faced similar issues with my 2017 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last month. The symptoms were identical, dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree, struggling to start, and the start-stop system acting up. Turned out both the auxiliary battery and the main hybrid battery needed attention. The auxiliary battery was completely dead and needed replacement. The connection between the main hybrid battery and the auxiliary system also had corrosion buildup that needed cleaning. This isn't just a simple battery swap like in conventional cars. These hybrid systems are quite complex and interconnected. My mechanic had to reprogram the battery management system after the replacement. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention, if left unchecked, it could've damaged other electrical components. The repair took about a day and a half to complete properly. Make sure whoever works on it knows hybrid systems well, not all mechanics do. Since getting it fixed, the car's been running perfectly. No more warning lights or starting issues.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Sorry to hear you went through that trouble too. Actually, that's super helpful because I'm dealing with pretty much the same symptoms right now. Do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been smooth sailing since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up? Just want to know what I might be in for. By the way, good point about finding someone who really knows hybrid systems, definitely don't want just anyone poking around in there!

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. The repair cost me 290 € for fixing the auxiliary battery issue, which was actually pretty reasonable considering how complicated these hybrid systems can be. I can tell you with confidence that it was money well spent, my car's been running like a dream since then. No more warning lights, no starting problems, and the start-stop system is working exactly as it should. It's been such a relief not seeing those error messages every time I get in the car! You're absolutely right to ask about any lingering issues, but honestly, everything's been perfect since the fix. My mechanic really knew what they were doing with the hybrid system, and it shows in the quality of the repair. The battery management system is working properly now, and I haven't had a single electrical problem since. Quick tip though, make sure your mechanic checks all the connections too, not just the battery itself. Those little details made a big difference in my case. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll feel like you've got a new car!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! I just got back from the mechanic today, and you wouldn't believe how spot-on your advice was. My issue turned out to be pretty similar to yours. The mechanic found that my auxiliary battery was completely shot and there was some nasty corrosion on the connections. They also had to do some reprogramming work on the battery management system. The whole thing cost me about 320 €, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. The best part? The car's running beautifully now. No more Christmas tree dashboard, and the start-stop system is working perfectly again. It's such a relief not having to worry every time I turn the key. The mechanic even showed me what was wrong and explained everything, really appreciated that level of service. You really helped me avoid what could've been another frustrating experience with the wrong mechanic. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction!
