BMW 3 Series built in 2015 - suspected exhaust gas recirculation defect
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A BMW 3 Series from 2015 with a diesel engine is experiencing issues such as black smoke, reduced engine power, loud hissing during acceleration, strong exhaust odor, and DPF regeneration problems. These symptoms suggest a potential defect in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. Similar issues in other vehicles were resolved by repairing or replacing the EGR valve, which is generally a straightforward fix. It is recommended to have the car checked by a mechanic to prevent further complications and ensure proper engine performance.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Good to hear that your problem was solved quickly. Can you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? It would be really interesting to know what costs I should expect. And so far, has everything gone smoothly since the repair or have there been any further problems? I just want to weigh up whether a repair is worthwhile.

It was very similar for me back then. After I went to the mechanic, everything worked again. It was probably only this one time that it really did go wrong. I paid around €150 to repair the damaged cables on the electric changeover valve. But since then my little Fiesta has been purring like a kitten again. I hope this information helps you a bit!

Hey, hello, sounds like a typical fad of an older diesel engine. My 2008 Toyota Avensis behaved in a similarly conspicuous manner, especially on inclines and under heavy acceleration it had massive power losses and black smoke was also not uncommon. Of course, with 236,814 km on the clock, a car's possessions can sometimes reach their limits. But before you go to any expense, get it checked by a competent mechanic. My repair cost me a whopping €200 at the time, but the car has been running smoothly ever since. Best wishes and good luck!

In any case, guys, thanks for the replies and experiences. I'm reassured that most of them were only minor repairs and that there were no further problems afterwards. At around €200 for the repair, I don't think I'll faint.... hopefully! I'll definitely get it checked out before it gets worse. Great, thanks again!

Hey, I understand your pain. Last time I was in the garage with my 2016 BMW 1 Series, also diesel engine, I had very similar symptoms. It turned out that my EGR valve was defective. Don't worry, it's nothing serious and usually quite straightforward to fix. Would definitely have it checked at the garage to prevent further problems and ensure proper engine performance. Hopefully my experience will help you a little. Good luck!
