BMW 3 Tailgate Fault: Hall Sensor or Something Else?

Hey everyone! Need some advice about my 2023 BMW 3 Hybrid (79,776 km). My tailgate's been acting up lately, won't open or close properly. Got an error code stored in the system and I suspect it might be the hall sensor. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar tailgate issues? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Also, any recommendations for dealing with this kind of BMW-specific problem would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Last month I faced a similar problem with my 2020 BMW 5 Series Hybrid at 82,000 km. Initially thought it was the hall sensor too, but turned out to be a loose wiring connector at the tailgate hinge. The issue wasn't major, just needed proper cleaning of the connection points and securing the cable harness. The mechanic showed me how the constant opening and closing had caused the wiring to get stressed at the bend point. Once fixed, the tailgate's been working perfectly fine. The error code cleared up right after the repair. From my experience, it's worth having a certified technician check the wiring connections first before replacing any sensors. These electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose, but they're often simpler fixes than expected. Hope this helps with your situation. Best regards

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's actually really helpful to know about the wiring connector. Mine's been fixed now, they found pretty much the same issue as yours. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks with the tailgate? Curious to know if I should keep an eye out for anything specific. Cheers!

Hi again! Great to hear you got it sorted! Yeah, for my repair I paid 95 €, mostly labor costs since it was just fixing that pesky cable connection. Honestly, it was a relief it wasn't anything more serious. Since getting it fixed, my tailgate's been working like a charm, no issues whatsoever. I've had it for about three months now post-repair and it's opening and closing perfectly. The hall sensor fault code hasn't popped up again either, which is pretty reassuring. Just to be safe, I've been a bit more mindful about not overloading the tailgate when it's open, and I make sure there's nothing blocking the sensors when closing it. But really, it's been trouble-free since the fix. Sounds like we both got lucky with a relatively simple fix. These modern cars can be pretty complex, but sometimes it's just the basic stuff that needs attention. Let me know if anything else comes up! Take care

Thanks so much for all that info! Yeah, my repair cost was pretty similar, ended up paying 105 € total. I took it to a new mechanic who was way better than my last one. The guy actually took the time to show me exactly what was wrong and fixed it right there. Funny story, while I was waiting in the shop, another BMW owner came in with the exact same problem! Got chatting with them and turns out these tailgate issues are more common than I thought. My mechanic was really thorough though, cleaned up all the connections and even checked the other wiring points just to be safe. Everything's working perfectly now, just like you said, no more error codes or weird noises. It's such a relief to have it sorted. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me feel a lot more confident about getting it fixed. Thanks again for all your help!
