BMW 4 Diesel Oil Pressure Warning: Help Needed

Hi everyone! My 2013 BMW 4 diesel is giving me trouble. The oil pressure warning light came on, accompanied by loud engine noises. The diagnostic also shows a fault code related to engine oil pressure control. I suspect low engine oil pressure might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Looking forward to your insights. Thanks

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, and I actually faced a very similar issue with my 2011 BMW 3 Series diesel (I also own a 5 Series). Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, the warning light and those worrying engine noises. Turned out my oil pump was failing. Had to get it replaced at my local workshop last year. The whole thing, including parts and labor, set me back about 755 Euro. Quick tip: Once you notice the oil pressure warning, it's best to avoid driving the car to prevent engine damage. Would you mind sharing if you've noticed any other symptoms? Also, what's your current mileage? This could help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same issue. Feel free to ask any specific questions about the repair process. Been there, done that, happy to help!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 163169 KM and had its last service 3 months ago. Had the same exact symptoms you described with your 3 Series. Those noises really got me worried! Good to know about the oil pump, I was leaning towards that being the issue too. I've also noticed slight vibrations at idle, which I didn't mention before. Just curious, how long did the repair take for you? I need to plan this out since it's my daily driver. Also, did you notice any improvement in overall engine performance after the fix?

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, those vibrations at idle are definitely another telltale sign, had those too with my 3 Series. The repair took about a day and a half in my case, but that's because my mechanic was super thorough and wanted to check everything while he had the engine opened up. And yes, there was a noticeable difference after the repair! The engine ran much smoother, those annoying vibrations disappeared completely, and it just felt more responsive overall. It's like getting a new car, honestly. Mine's now at 178000 KM and running like a charm since the oil pump replacement. Quick heads up though, make sure they check the oil pickup tube while they're in there. Mine had some debris buildup which could've caused issues down the line. My mechanic cleaned it out during the repair, didn't cost extra but definitely worth doing. Given your mileage and symptoms, it sounds exactly like what I dealt with. Planning-wise, I'd suggest having a backup transport option for 2-3 days just to be safe. Let me know how it goes when you get it fixed!

Thanks so much for the detailed info! That's super helpful about checking the oil pickup tube, definitely going to mention that to my mechanic. Good thing you caught that debris buildup in yours. 2-3 days without the car is longer than I hoped, but better to get it done right. I can probably work from home those days, so that works out okay. Really looking forward to experiencing that smoother engine performance you mentioned. I'll get it booked in next week and make sure they do a thorough job like your mechanic did. Thanks again for all your help, it's definitely put my mind at ease knowing someone else has successfully dealt with the same issue. I'll update you once it's fixed!
