Whistling noise

Hey everyone! Having issues with my 2022 BMW 4 EV. The engine power is noticeably down, and I'm getting both whistling and hissing sounds during acceleration. The check engine light is on, and there's an error logged in the system. I suspect it might be related to the charge air temperature sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW i4 (I also own an iX). I have some experience working on EVs and doing basic maintenance, but I'm no expert. The symptoms you describe sound very familiar. In my case, it turned out to be a loose connection in the sensor wiring harness. My trusted workshop found that the cable connection to the temperature sensor was defective. The fix was relatively straightforward, they replaced the faulty wiring and connections, which cost me 95 Euro. Before you head to a workshop though, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your 4 EV? When did these symptoms first appear? Have you noticed any changes in your driving range? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'm at 151633 KM and just started noticing these issues about a week ago, right after my latest service actually. The driving range has definitely taken a hit, I'm getting about 15-20% less range than usual. I'll have my mechanic check the wiring connections as you suggested. Did you notice any immediate improvement in performance after your repair? The whistling sound is really starting to worry me.

Hey again! Yes, after my wiring repair, I noticed an immediate improvement, both the whistling and the hissing completely disappeared. The power returned to normal, and my range went back to what it used to be. Sounds like you're experiencing exactly what I went through! The fact that it started right after your service is interesting, something similar happened to me. The technician might have accidentally disturbed the wiring while working on something else. These connections can be pretty sensitive. In my case, before getting it fixed, the whistling sound got progressively louder over about two weeks. It was especially noticeable during hard acceleration. My range kept dropping too, just like yours. I was actually worried it might be something more serious with the motor, but thankfully it was just that loose connection. Quick tip from my experience, when you take it to the mechanic, ask them to check all the sensor connections in that area, not just the temperature sensor. Sometimes there can be multiple loose connections that need attention. Better to catch everything while they're in there. Keep us posted on what you find out! Always happy to help a fellow BMW EV owner.

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! You've really put my mind at ease. I've scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning and specifically mentioned checking all the sensor connections like you suggested. Makes total sense about the service possibly disturbing the wiring, I hadn't even considered that connection. The whistling is definitely getting more noticeable during acceleration, just like you described. Hopefully it'll be a simple fix like yours was. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and tips. Will definitely update once I get it checked out! Thanks again for walking me through this. It's great to get advice from someone who's dealt with the same issue.
