BMW 4 Series Fuel Pump Failure Signs and Solutions

Hi all! Need advice regarding potential fuel pump issues on my 2015 BMW 4 Series (195k km). Car's been acting up lately, won't start sometimes, stalls when idling, and runs pretty rough. Check engine light is on, and I'm burning through fuel like crazy. My last mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations for handling this issue, especially if it turned out to be the fuel pump. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2012 BMW 3 Series last year. Started with occasional rough idling, then progressed to unusual stalling and terrible fuel consumption. Initially thought it was something minor, but the symptoms matched fuel pump failure. Turned out the fuel pump's electrical connector was corroded and had a loose connection, which caused intermittent power supply issues to the pump. The diagnostic showed the pump itself was fine, but the wiring harness and connector needed replacement. While not the most expensive repair, it's definitely not something to ignore, fuel supply issues can leave you stranded or cause bigger problems if left unchecked. A proper BMW specialist should be able to diagnose this quickly with the right diagnostic tools. My advice: Get it checked soon, as these symptoms usually don't improve on their own. If it is the fuel pump or connection issues like in my case, it's a straightforward fix for a qualified mechanic. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It really sounds similar to what I went through. I'm curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the wiring harness and connector replacement? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Just want to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if I should expect any related problems down the line.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! Yeah, I got it fixed right after our last chat, the repair cost me 95€ for fixing the cable and connection issues. Pretty reasonable, honestly, considering how much I was worried it might cost. The mechanic confirmed it was exactly what I suspected, just a faulty connection to the fuel pump. The best part? My car's been running like a dream since then! No more stalling, no rough idling, and my fuel consumption is back to normal. It's been about 8 months now, and I haven't had a single related issue pop up. Seriously, it's like driving a different car. The repair was way simpler than I expected, just needed to fix that connection, no need to replace the entire fuel pump. My mechanic said these connector issues are pretty common on BMWs of our generation. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll notice the difference immediately. Just make sure you go to someone who knows what they're doing with BMW electrical systems. Worth every penny to have it done right! Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from seeing a BMW specialist today. You were right, it was a very similar issue. The mechanic found corroded wiring and a loose connection to the fuel pump. Initially, I was super nervous it would cost a fortune, but the repair was surprisingly affordable. The best part is how smoothly my car's running now! No more stalling, and that annoying rough idle is completely gone. The check engine light cleared up too. Honestly wish I'd done this sooner instead of worrying about it for weeks. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it checked out. The mechanic even mentioned the same thing about these connector issues being common in our models. Guess we learned something new about our BMWs! Thanks again for the help, definitely saved me from potentially bigger problems down the road!
