BMW 4 Series Power Loss: PCV Valve Issues?

Hey everyone, having trouble with my 2015 BMW 4 series. The car's showing some concerning symptoms, check engine light is on, engine power feels low, and speed keeps fluctuating. I suspect it might be the crankcase ventilation valve. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What did your mechanic do to fix it? Any insight on repair costs would be great too.

Summary of the thread

A 2015 BMW 4 Series is experiencing power loss, fluctuating speed, and a check engine light, potentially due to a faulty crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Similar issues in a BMW 3 Series were resolved by replacing the valve and cleaning the ventilation system, which improved engine performance and fuel economy. It's advised to have the entire ventilation system checked for blockages to ensure a comprehensive fix.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2013 BMW 3 series last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced. I took it to my regular workshop after the check engine light came on and the car started feeling sluggish. They diagnosed it as a faulty crankcase ventilation system. The repair, including parts and labor, cost me around 360 Euro. The mechanic replaced the valve and cleaned out the whole ventilation system. After the fix, the car ran smooth again, no more power issues or fluctuating speeds. What's your current mileage and have you noticed any oil consumption or smoke from the exhaust? This info would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem. Let me know if you need any other details about how I handled this!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, sounds pretty similar to what I'm dealing with. I'm at 178,660 KM and had my last service about three months ago. Haven't noticed any excessive oil consumption, but the power loss is really noticeable, especially when accelerating. Good to know it was fixable in your case, that price doesn't sound too bad either. I'll probably take it to my mechanic this week just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the help!

Hey again! Glad to help! Yeah, your mileage is pretty close to what mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 165,000 KM). And you're right, the power loss during acceleration was super annoying. Just to share a bit more from my experience: after I got it fixed, I learned that regular maintenance of the CCV system is pretty important on these BMWs, especially once you hit the 150,000 KM mark. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before I got it fixed, I also noticed the car running a bit rough when idling, especially after a cold start. Did you experience that too? The interesting thing is that after the repair, not only did the power issues go away, but my fuel economy actually improved a bit. Just a heads up, make sure your mechanic checks the entire ventilation system, not just the valve. In my case, there was also some gunk built up in the lines that needed cleaning. Better to get it all sorted while they're in there. Keep us posted on how it goes with your mechanic!

Thanks so much for the additional info! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed that rough idling in the morning. I just didn't connect it to the same issue. Really appreciate the tip about getting the whole system checked, I'll definitely mention that to my mechanic when I take it in. It's funny you mention the fuel economy thing because I've noticed mine has gotten worse lately, so hopefully I'll see the same improvement you did after the repair. I've booked it in for tomorrow morning, so I'll make sure they do a thorough check of everything. The fact that you had such a positive outcome after the repair makes me feel a lot better about the whole situation. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this, it's been super helpful! I'll definitely post an update once I get it sorted.
