BMW 4 Series Power Steering Failure Troubleshooting Help

Hi everyone! Having some serious concerns with my 2016 BMW 4 Series diesel (158k km). The steering feels really off, no power assist, wheel shakes a lot, and handling feels loose and unresponsive. Car's throwing an error code too. Pretty sure it's the power steering, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm a bit hesitant. Has anyone dealt with similar steering issues on their BMW? What was the actual problem and how much did repairs cost? Would really appreciate some insights before I take it to a shop. Thanks!

Hey there, I can relate to your power steering concerns. Had a similar issue with my 2013 BMW 3 Series diesel last summer. The symptoms were nearly identical to what you're describing, heavy steering, vibrations, and that concerning error message. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty electrical connection to the power steering unit. The cable had worn through and was causing intermittent power loss to the system. While diagnosing, the mechanic found the connector was corroded too. The fix wasn't overly complex, but it's definitely not a DIY job since it required proper diagnostic equipment. They had to replace the wiring harness and clean up the connection points. Not the most serious repair for a BMW, but something you want to address quickly before it affects other electrical components. Given your car's symptoms match what I experienced, I'd suggest getting it checked soon. The steering system isn't something you want to gamble with. Just make sure you find a shop that specializes in BMW electrical systems.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'm relieved to hear it wasn't something more catastrophic. Would you mind sharing how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, curious if you've had any other steering-related problems pop up since getting it fixed? Trying to figure out if I should budget for any potential follow-up issues.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, yeah, after I took it to the mechanic, they completely sorted out that power steering issue I mentioned. The whole thing ended up costing 95€, which was honestly a relief since I was worried it might be something way more expensive. They just had to fix a dodgy cable connection that was causing all the trouble. And to answer your other question, nope, haven't had a single steering problem since then. The car's been handling like a dream, just like when it was new. The shaking and that heavy steering feel completely disappeared. Money well spent if you ask me! Since your symptoms sound identical to what I dealt with, I reckon you're probably looking at the same kind of repair. Just make sure you get a mechanic who knows their way around BMW electrical systems, that's really the key here. But honestly, once it's fixed, you shouldn't have to worry about any follow-up issues. Mine's been running perfectly for months now.

I actually went ahead and got it checked out today! You were spot on about the electrical connection issue. The mechanic found a damaged wire harness that was causing all the problems. What a relief it wasn't the entire power steering unit. Got it all fixed up for around €800, more than what you paid but still way better than what I was fearing. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me exactly what was wrong. They cleaned up some corrosion and replaced the damaged wiring. Took it for a test drive afterward and wow, what a difference! The steering's super smooth now, no more shaking, and that error code is gone. Feels like I'm driving a new car. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Thanks again for your help. It gave me the confidence to get it checked out right away instead of waiting until it got worse. And you were right about finding a BMW specialist, they knew exactly what to look for. Hopefully this helps someone else who runs into similar issues!
