BMW 5 Hybrid Jerking During Acceleration, Help Needed
Summary of the thread
A 2015 BMW 5 Hybrid was experiencing jerking during acceleration, poor fuel economy, and difficult cold starts. Initially suspected to be a throttle valve issue, the problem was later identified as worn-out spark plugs and a clogged fuel injector. After replacing the spark plugs and cleaning the fuel system, the car's performance improved significantly, resolving the jerking and fuel economy issues. The experience highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and finding a reliable mechanic.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. That's really interesting about the accelerator pedal module, I wouldn't have thought of that. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up?

Hey there again! Yeah, happy to follow up! After my last message, I actually took my car to the mechanic and turned out my initial hunch was right, it was indeed the throttle valve that was acting up. The good news is theyaged to fix it completely. The total repair bill came to 205 € for fixing the defective accelerator pedal module, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The car's been running like a dream since then, no more jerking during acceleration, fuel economy is back to normal, and those annoying cold start issues are completely gone. I've put about 3,000 km on it since the repair and haven't noticed any other issues pop up. The acceleration is buttery smooth now, just like when I first got the car. It's such a relief not having to deal with that hesitation every time I press the gas pedal. Have you had a chance to get yours looked at yet? If you're still shopping around for a mechanic, I'd be happy to tell you more about my experience with the repair process. It's definitely worth getting it sorted sooner rather than later.

Thanks for sharing those details! I wanted to follow up and let you know I actually got my car fixed last week. Took it to a certified mechanic who specializes in hybrids. Turned out it wasn't the throttle valve after all, they found some worn-out spark plugs and a clogged fuel injector were causing all those issues. The total repair came to about 350 Euro for parts and labor. They had to keep my car for a day and a half to do a thorough fuel system cleaning along with replacing the spark plugs. The mechanic was great, showed me all the old parts and explained exactly what was wrong. I've driven about 500 km since the repair and what a difference! No more jerking during acceleration, the cold starts are smooth, and my fuel economy is back to normal. The engine runs so much quieter now too, which I hadn't even realized was an issue before. Really glad I got it sorted, just wish I'd done it sooner instead of worrying about going back to my old mechanic. Sometimes you just need to find the right mechanic for the job. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out!

Hey there! I had almost identical issues with my 2018 BMW 3 Series Hybrid last winter. The jerking during acceleration and poor fuel economy were exactly what I experienced. Initially thought it was the throttle valve too, but when I took it to the garage, it turned out to be a defective accelerator pedal module. Got it diagnosed with their computer system, and the readings showed faulty signals from the pedal sensor to the engine control unit. This was causing the erratic acceleration and the fuel consumption problems. The repair involved replacing the entire pedal module assembly. It wasn't a quick fix, had to leave my car at the garage for two days since they needed to program the new module to sync with the car's computer system. This was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention, driving with these symptoms could potentially damage other components or leave you stranded. Since the repair, my car's been running smooth, acceleration is back to normal, and fuel economy has improved significantly. Would definitely recommend getting it checked out soon before it gets worse. Hope this helps with your decision.
