BMW 5 Hybrid Power Loss: Manifold Sensor Alert

Hi everyone! I need your advice regarding my 2019 BMW 5 Hybrid (185k km). The engine's been acting up lately, power loss, sluggish response, and burning more fuel than usual. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the manifold pressure sensor based on some research. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their BMW? Any recommendations on trusted mechanics who really know these hybrid systems? Also curious about potential repair costs if it is indeed the manifold sensor. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2016 BMW 7 Series Hybrid last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, power drops, poor acceleration, and terrible fuel economy. Initially thought it was the manifold sensor too, but turned out to be a significant vacuum leak in the intake system. Had mine fixed at a garage specializing in German hybrids. The mechanic found multiple cracked vacuum lines and a worn-out gasket that were causing major air leaks. It was actually quite serious because the engine was running extremely lean, which could've caused more damage if left unfixed. The repair involved replacing several vacuum lines, gaskets, and running comprehensive testing on the hybrid system to ensure everything was properly sealed. It was definitely not a quick fix, took them about two days to complete everything properly. Make sure whoever checks your car has proper diagnostic tools for BMW hybrids. They're quite different from regular BMWs, and not all mechanics are properly equipped to handle them. Best of luck with the repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That vacuum leak diagnosis makes a lot of sense with my symptoms. You've got me thinking it might be something similar in my case too. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed? It'd really help me get an idea of what I'm potentially facing here.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, turns out my initial reply wasn't entirely on point. While I did have that vacuum leak issue I mentioned, I actually took my 7 Series in last week and discovered it was indeed the manifold pressure sensor causing problems, just like you initially suspected with yours! The repair cost me 235 € to fix the vacuum leak issue, which wasn't too bad considering all the work they did. Since they sorted out the faulty manifold pressure sensor, my car's been running like a dream, no more power issues, fuel consumption is back to normal, and the engine response is spot on. Honestly, I'm pretty relieved it wasn't anything more serious. These hybrids can be tricky beasts, but once you get them sorted, they're fantastic to drive. Haven't had a single problem since the repair, and it's been smooth sailing all the way. Hope this helps give you a better idea of what you might be looking at. If you need any other info about the repair, just give me a shout!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and you won't believe it, it was exactly what I initially thought! The manifold pressure sensor was faulty and needed replacement. My wallet's a bit lighter now (cost me about 300), but honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic I found was great, super transparent about the whole process and even showed me the old sensor. He ran a full diagnostic test afterward to make sure everything was working properly. The car's running beautifully now, no more power issues, and the fuel consumption is back to normal. Actually feel a bit silly for putting it off for so long because of my previous bad experience with mechanics. The whole thing took about 3 hours, and I even got to watch them work on it. Really appreciate everyone's input here, it definitely helped me make the right decision to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Time to enjoy my smooth-running BMW again! Thanks again for all the help and sharing your experience, it really made a difference in my decision-making process.
