BMW 5 Series: Fuel Injector Issues & Poor Performance Help

Need help: 2009 BMW 5 injection nozzle problems? My 2009 BMW 5 with gas engine has been acting up lately. Engine starts poorly, burns more fuel than usual, and runs with reduced power. Also noticed rough idling, occasional stalling, and it failed emissions. I suspect faulty injection nozzles but want to confirm before heading to the shop. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience and cost? Any input would be helpful.

Hi there! I can relate to your issue. I had a similar problem with my 2011 BMW 3 series (also had a 7 series before). I have some experience working with cars, mostly basic maintenance. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, poor starts, high fuel consumption, and rough idling. My mechanic found dirty injection valves were causing the problems. The cleaning and replacement process cost me around 515 Euro, but it completely solved the issues. Before I make any other suggestions, could you share: Current mileage? Are you getting any error codes? When was your last fuel system service? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. BTW, regular fuel system cleaning could help prevent these issues in the future.

Thanks for your detailed response! My current mileage is 62035 KM and had my last service about 4 months ago. No error codes showing up on the dash, but definitely experiencing all those symptoms you mentioned. The fuel consumption increase is really noticeable, I'm using about 15-20% more fuel than usual. Your repair cost sounds reasonable actually. I was worried it might be way more expensive. Did you get OEM parts for the replacement? And how long did the whole repair process take? Just trying to plan ahead in case I need to leave my car at the shop. Really appreciate your help with this. Always good to hear from someone who's dealt with the same issue firsthand.

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. You know, those symptoms you're describing are spot on with what I experienced with my BMW. And your mileage isn't too far from where mine was when I had the issue. Yeah, I definitely went with OEM parts, learned my lesson with aftermarket stuff on my old 7 series! For my 3 series, the whole job took about 4-5 hours at the shop. They did a thorough cleaning first, then replaced the injectors that were beyond saving. Honestly, it was worth every penny because the car ran like new afterward. That 15-20% increase in fuel consumption you mentioned, that's exactly what I was seeing too! It's actually a classic sign of injector problems in these BMWs. After the repair, my fuel efficiency went right back to normal. Quick tip from my experience, while they're in there, have them check the fuel pressure regulator too. Mine was slightly off, and fixing that made a big difference in how the car ran. Didn't add much to the total cost either. Let me know how it goes if you get it fixed. Always interested in hearing how these repairs work out for other BMW owners!

Thanks so much for all this info, it's super helpful! That's a good heads-up about checking the fuel pressure regulator too. I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. Really glad to hear the repair time isn't too long, and I'm relieved about going with OEM parts being the right call. I've already called my regular mechanic and booked it in for next week. They quoted me about the same price range as what you paid, so that makes me feel better about the whole thing. The fuel consumption issue is driving me crazy, so I can't wait to get it sorted. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's made me feel much more confident about what needs to be done. I'll definitely update you once it's all fixed up. Thanks again for all your help!
