BMW 6 Series AC Dead, Compressor Warning Light Issues

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I dealt with a very similar AC issue on my 2020 BMW 4 Series last summer. My also owns a BMW 5 Series, so I'm quite familiar with these cars. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced. Initially thought it was the compressor too, but turned out the AC control unit was completely dead. Took it to my trusted workshop, and their diagnostic confirmed the control module failure. The repair involved replacing the entire control unit, parts and labor came to about 980 Euro, which wasn't fun for my wallet! Before I can help more specifically, could you share what error codes you're getting? Also, does the fan still work when you turn on the ventilation, or is it completely dead? These details would help determine if you're facing the same issue I had. I really recommend getting it checked soon because running without proper AC can lead to other problems. Let me know those details, and I can share more about my repair experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car is still at 79435 KM and had its latest service just two months ago. When I turn on the ventilation, the fan works fine, but there's absolutely no cooling. I'm getting error code P0645 which seems to point directly at the AC control circuit. Really hoping it's not as expensive as your repair! Did you notice any strange noises before your AC completely gave up? Mine made a slight clicking sound for about a week before it died completely. Honestly, I'm dreading taking it to the dealer but guess I don't have much choice since it's still under warranty. Just want to be armed with some knowledge before I go in there.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those extra details. You know what's interesting, my situation was incredibly similar to yours. My BMW also had around 80K on the clock when this happened, and I remember that exact clicking sound you mentioned! It went on for about 8-10 days before total failure. The P0645 code is exactly what I got too. Since you mentioned your car is still under warranty (lucky you!), definitely take it to the dealer. When I had mine fixed, I had to pay out of pocket since my warranty had just expired a few months before, talk about bad timing! Just to give you some peace of mind, the clicking sound and the error code combo is pretty much a textbook case of the control unit issue I experienced. The good news is that since you're under warranty, you won't have to deal with the cost I did. The repair itself took about 4-5 hours at my workshop. One thing though, even though the fan is working (mine did too), don't keep running the AC system. I made that mistake and kept trying to use it for a few days, which my mechanic later told me could have caused additional stress on other components. Let me know how it goes at the dealer. I'm really curious to hear if they find the same issue. I've got a long thread of texts with my discussing these AC problems, seems like it's not uncommon in these models.

Here's how I would write the final response Thanks so much for the detailed info! That's actually really reassuring to hear that your experience was so similar to mine, especially about the clicking sound. I'll definitely stop trying to use the AC system now, wasn't aware it could cause more damage, so I really appreciate that tip. Making my dealer appointment first thing tomorrow morning. It's a relief to know this seems to be a known issue with these models, makes me feel better about going in to get it checked. I'll try to remember to update you once I get it diagnosed and fixed. Really grateful for all your help and for sharing your experience, helped calm my nerves about the whole situation! Would've been totally in the dark about what to expect otherwise.
