BMW 6 Series Power Loss: Throttle Valve Warning Signs

Hi all! I'm having trouble with my 2006 BMW 6 series. The engine power is down, idle speed is high, and the accelerator pedal isn't responding. Check engine light is on and the car's running in emergency mode. I suspect it might be the throttle valve, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Anyone had this fixed before? What was the repair process and cost like at your workshop? Appreciate any insights.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and faced a similar issue with my 2008 BMW 5 Series (also had a BMW 3 Series before). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. My car also went into limp mode with the same problems, sluggish response, high idle, and that annoying check engine light. Took it to my regular workshop and turns out it was the accelerator pedal module that went bad. The electronics inside were fried. Got it replaced for about 265 Euro and that fixed everything, car's been running perfectly since then. Before we dig deeper, could you share if you've scanned for error codes? Also, what's the mileage on your 6 Series? These details would help figure out if we're looking at the same issue. Quick tip: If you notice any delay or inconsistency when pressing the gas pedal, that's usually a dead giveaway for the accelerator module problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 6er has 115620 KM on the clock, and I just had it serviced last month. That's really helpful to know about the accelerator pedal module, the symptoms do sound identical to what I'm experiencing. The pedal definitely feels off, like there's a disconnect between pressing it and the engine response. Didn't even think about the module being the culprit, was so focused on the throttle valve. 265 Euro seems reasonable compared to what I was expecting to pay. I'll get it scanned tomorrow and report back with the error codes. Really appreciate the insight!

Hey again! Glad I could help with the initial direction. You know, after I fixed my accelerator pedal module on my 5 Series, I actually had a similar issue pop up about a year later, but this time it was indeed the throttle valve. The symptoms were almost identical, which is why these issues can be so tricky to diagnose without proper scanning. I'd definitely wait for those error codes before making any decisions, but here's what I learned from my experience: the throttle valve issue usually comes with a slight stuttering when you're accelerating from a stop, while the pedal module problem is more of a constant delayed response. With my throttle valve problem, I also noticed some rough idling that would come and go, which wasn't the case with the pedal module failure. The throttle valve replacement on my car ended up costing around 400 Euro, parts and labor included. Not cheap, but not as bad as I feared. The repair took about 2-3 hours at my workshop. If your codes point to the throttle valve, I'd recommend getting it done sooner rather than later, driving in limp mode isn't great for the engine long-term. Let me know what those codes show up. Would be interesting to see if we're dealing with the same gremlins here!

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! This actually makes me feel quite a bit better about the whole situation. I'll definitely pay attention to that stuttering vs. delayed response difference you mentioned, now that you point it out, I'm leaning more towards the pedal module since mine's more of a constant delay rather than stuttering. The fact that you've dealt with both issues really helps put things in perspective. Even if it turns out to be the throttle valve at 400 Euro, that's still manageable. I was honestly worried it might be something much more serious (and expensive!). I've got an appointment tomorrow morning to get those error codes read, and I'll make sure to check for both the pedal module and throttle valve symptoms you described. Really grateful for walking me through your experiences with both repairs. Having this knowledge before heading to the workshop will definitely help me have a more informed conversation with the mechanic. I'll update once I know more after the scan!
