BMW 6 Transmission Warning: Signs, Costs & Solutions
Summary of the thread
A 2022 BMW 6 owner experienced transmission issues, including a warning light, rough shifting, and grinding noises, suspecting a faulty transmission pressure sensor. Another individual shared a similar experience with a BMW 5 Series, where low transmission fluid due to a leak caused false sensor readings. The solution involved replacing the transmission pan gasket, filter, and fluid. The BMW 6 owner followed similar advice, confirming low fluid and a faulty sensor as the cause, and resolved the issue with a mechanic, restoring smooth operation.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds exactly like what I'm going through with my car right now. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair ended up costing you? Also, have you had any transmission issues pop up since getting it fixed? I'm definitely planning to get it checked soon, this grinding noise is making me really nervous. Appreciate the heads up about the fluid level issue too, hadn't even considered that might be the culprit.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update, and good news actually! Just got my car back from the shop last week, and yep, it was exactly what I had suspected. The transmission oil pressure sensor was acting up because of low gearbox oil level, just like what happened with my 5 Series. All sorted now though, paid 365 € for the full fix, which included topping up the fluid and replacing that dodgy sensor. Not exactly cheap, but way better than having to deal with major transmission repairs down the line! Since getting it fixed, the car's been running smooth as butter, no more grinding noises, warning lights are gone, and the gearbox is shifting like new again. Haven't had a single problem with the transmission since then. Honestly, it's such a relief to have it sorted. Sounds like you're dealing with the exact same issue I had. My advice? Don't wait too long to get it checked out, these transmission problems can get pretty nasty (and expensive!) if you let them drag on. Let me know how it goes when you get yours looked at!

Really appreciate all your input and follow-up! Just got back from the mechanic today, and I've got to say, what a relief! Had almost the exact same diagnosis, low transmission fluid and a faulty sensor. Total bill came to around 400, which wasn't too bad considering what I was imagining. The mechanic I found was actually great, super transparent about everything and showed me exactly what was wrong. The grinding noise was making me lose sleep, but now my BMW's shifting like a dream again. They even threw in a complimentary full inspection, which was a nice bonus. Funny how our situations were so similar! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me know what to expect and gave me the push I needed to get it sorted quickly. Sometimes these car troubles work out better than expected! Now I can finally enjoy driving my car again without worrying about that annoying warning light. What a weight off my shoulders!

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 5 Series last year. The symptoms were almost identical, transmission warning light, rough shifts, and that annoying grinding noise. The emergency mode kicked in too. Turned out my gearbox oil level was critically low due to a small leak at the transmission pan gasket. The pressure sensor was giving false readings because of the low fluid level. The mechanic had to drop the transmission pan, replace the gasket and filter, and do a complete fluid change. It was actually a serious issue because running low on transmission fluid can cause permanent damage to the internal components. In my case, catching it early prevented any major transmission damage. Got it fixed at the dealership since I didn't want to risk my transmission with an independent shop. The repair took about a day and a half because they had to do some diagnostic tests after the fix to make sure everything was working properly. Your symptoms really sound similar to what I experienced. I'd recommend getting it checked soon before it leads to bigger problems.
