BMW 7 Door Sensors Gone Haywire, Common Issue?

Hi all! My 2006 BMW 7 diesel has developed some door-related issues. The car shows a door open warning even when all doors are closed. Can't lock or unlock properly, and the auto-lock while driving doesn't work anymore. I suspect it might be a faulty door contact signal. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Looking for insights before heading to the workshop. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2008 BMW 5 diesel (had a few BMWs, including a 3 series). I'd say I have some basic experience working with cars, mostly routine maintenance stuff. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. It turned out to be a faulty wiring connection in the door control module. My trusted mechanic found that the cable connections had corroded over time, causing those unusual door warnings and locking issues. The fix wasn't too complicated, they cleaned and repaired the connections, which cost me about 95 Euro. Car's been working perfectly since then. But before jumping to conclusions, could you share: Which door is showing the warning? Does this happen more often in wet weather? Are you experiencing any other electrical issues? This info would help determine if you're facing the same problem I had.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'm dealing with this issue at 165508 KM. The warning actually shows up for the rear passenger door most often, especially during rainy days. No other electrical problems so far, thankfully. The corrosion issue you mentioned makes a lot of sense given my car's age and mileage. I just had my service last month and they didn't spot anything obvious, but they weren't specifically looking at the door wiring. I'll have them check the connections as you suggested, really hoping it's a simple fix like yours was!

Hey again! Good to hear back from you. those symptoms are so similar to what I experienced with my BMW 5, especially the part about the rain making it worse. When you mentioned the rear passenger door, it instantly clicked because that's exactly where my issue was too! Just to add to my previous response, after getting it fixed, I actually started noticing that keeping the door rubber seals well-maintained helped prevent moisture from getting to those connections again. I've been using a rubber care product every few months, and it's been smooth sailing for the past couple of years. Since your mileage is pretty close to what mine was when this happened (I was around 170000 KM), I'm even more convinced it's the same issue. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before getting it fixed, I noticed the problem would sometimes temporarily resolve itself during dry, warm days, but would always come back when it rained. Did you notice anything like that? Definitely have them check those connections, it's way better than replacing entire modules or door locks, which some shops might suggest. Keep us posted on what they find!

Thanks so much for the follow-up! You've hit the nail on the head, I've actually noticed exactly that pattern with the weather! The problem does seem less noticeable on dry, warm days. I really appreciate the tip about the rubber seals too, that's definitely something I'll keep in mind for preventive maintenance after getting this fixed. It's such a relief to hear from someone who's dealt with the same issue. I was worried it might be something major, but your experience gives me hope it's just those corroded connections. I've booked an appointment with my mechanic for next week and specifically mentioned checking the door module wiring. I'll make sure to pass along what you've told me about your experience, it'll help them know exactly where to look. Thanks again for all your help. You've saved me a lot of worry and potentially some money too! I'll definitely update the thread once I get it sorted.
