BMW 7 Hybrid Stalling Issues: FPR Problem or Something Else?

Hey everyone! My 2022 BMW 7 Hybrid is acting up lately, engine light is on, power feels sluggish, and it's running rough at idle with unusual stalls. I suspect it might be the fuel pressure regulator. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their 7 series hybrid? Interested in hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Looking for workshop feedback too. Thanks

Hey there! Got some experience with hybrids, I drive a 2020 BMW 5 Series Hybrid (also had a 3 Series before). Had almost identical issues after a fuel filter change. Engine light, weak acceleration, rough idle, the works. Turned out there was an error in the fuel pressure sensor calibration. My regular workshop fixed it with a diagnostic reset and recalibration. Cost me around 45 Euro and took about an hour. But before jumping to conclusions, what's your mileage, and when was your last service? Also, did these symptoms start right after any maintenance work? This info would help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same problem. Give those details, and I might be able to share more specific tips from my experience. Note: I'd rate myself as having some experience with BMWs, mainly through ownership and basic maintenance.

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! My mileage is at 44087 KM and I had my last service about 3 months ago. Actually, these issues started showing up gradually over the past couple weeks, wasn't related to any maintenance work. It's good to hear you had a similar experience that was solved relatively easily. Did your car also have intermittent stalling like mine? That's what's really got me worried. I'm hoping it's just a sensor calibration issue like yours was, rather than a more serious problem. I'll definitely keep the pressure sensor in mind when I take it to the workshop.

Hey again! Yeah, my car did have those intermittent stalling issues too, super annoying and definitely nerve-wracking! Since your symptoms started gradually and not after maintenance (unlike mine), I'm actually thinking it might be different from my sensor calibration problem. After dealing with BMWs for years, I've learned that gradual onset of these symptoms often points to actual fuel pressure regulator wear. Had this happen on my previous 3 Series too. The telltale sign was that gradual decline in performance, especially the stalling at idle. In your case, with 44K km, it's a bit early for regulator failure, but not unheard of. My suggestion would be to get the fuel pressure tested specifically. When my 3 Series had this issue, the workshop did a proper fuel pressure test and found the regulator wasn't maintaining consistent pressure, which explains all your symptoms. Cost me about 300 for the part plus labor, but at least it solved the problem completely. Much better than playing guessing games with sensors and calibrations. Let me know what your workshop finds, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for the additional insight! You've actually made me feel a lot better about the situation. I was worried it might be something much more serious with the hybrid system. The fact that you've experienced this with both your 3 Series and saw similar symptoms is really helpful. I'll definitely ask the workshop to do a proper fuel pressure test first, rather than just jumping to conclusions. You're right, even though it seems early for regulator failure at my mileage, it makes sense given how the problems developed gradually. 300 for parts and labor doesn't sound too bad if it fixes everything. I've booked it in for next week, so I'll make sure to mention both the sensor calibration possibility and request the fuel pressure test specifically. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences, it's given me a much clearer idea of what to expect. Will let you know how it turns out!
