BMW 7 Power Steering Failure: Heavy Wheel & Error Code

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2007 BMW 5 Series diesel. The heavy steering and vibration turned out to be a faulty power steering control module connection. Last month, my trusted mechanic found corroded pins in the module's wiring harness, which was causing intermittent power steering failures. The fix wasn't too complex, they cleaned the connections, replaced some damaged wires, and recalibrated the power steering system. The shaking completely stopped, and the steering went back to being smooth. While it wasn't a major repair, catching it early prevented damage to the power steering pump. From my experience with BMWs, these symptoms shouldn't be ignored as they can lead to complete steering failure if left unchecked. Make sure whoever looks at it has experience with BMW power steering systems, they're quite different from standard hydraulic setups. Take care.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who's been through something similar. The symptoms you described are exactly what I'm dealing with. Sounds like I caught it at the right time before it got worse. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other steering quirks? Thanks!

Great to hear back from you! Just wanted to update, after that repair I mentioned, my steering has been working like a charm. Haven't had a single issue since then. It was totally worth getting it fixed when I did. The repair bill came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable connection in the power steering module. Pretty reasonable, considering how much grief that wonky steering was causing me! The mechanic mentioned I was lucky to catch it early before it could damage other components, which would've been way more expensive. Since the fix, my car's handling like a dream, no more wrestling with the steering wheel or dealing with that annoying shake. Feels just like when I first got the car. Seriously, it's like night and day difference. Let me know how yours turns out!

Thanks for all your help! Just wanted to give you an update on my BMW situation. Finally got it sorted last week, you were spot on about the wiring issue! Took it to this really great mechanic who specializes in European cars. He found some nasty corrosion in the power steering module, just like you mentioned. What a relief it wasn't anything major! Cost me about 120 € including diagnostic fees. Bit more than yours but still way better than I expected. The best part? My steering's back to normal now, smooth as butter! No more fighting with the wheel or that scary shaking. Can't believe I was stressing so much about it. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. You saved me from potentially bigger headaches down the road!
