BMW 7 Series Rain Sensor Issues Trigger Multiple Failures

Thanks for your reply! Just had my service done last week at 67311 KM. Yes, actually I noticed it started gradually over the past few weeks. No condensation visible near the sensor area, but I'm getting the "Check Control" message on the dash. I'm thinking it might be the same issue you had with your 5 Series. Been driving BMWs for years and never encountered this before. Did you have any warning lights on the dash before replacing the sensor? Really appreciate your detailed response and willingness to help troubleshoot.

Hey again! Yes, I definitely had warning lights, mainly the "Check Control" message like you're seeing. That's exactly how mine started too, gradually getting worse over time. Sounds like we're dealing with the identical issue here. In my case, even though I couldn't see any obvious condensation, once they removed the old sensor, there was definitely moisture damage inside. These sensors are pretty sensitive pieces of kit, and they can fail even without visible external damage. What's interesting is that my warning lights started right around the same mileage as yours, I was at about 65000 km when the problems began. With BMWs, these sensors tend to start acting up around this age, regardless of how well you maintain the car. Just to be sure, are your auto headlights completely dead, or do they sometimes work intermittently? Mine would occasionally work for a few minutes before failing again, which was really annoying, especially during dawn and dusk drives. I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out soon. The sensor itself isn't expensive, but driving without proper auto functions can be a pain, especially in changing weather conditions. Plus, it's always better to fix these things before they potentially cause other issues. Let me know if you want me to explain more about the repair process, I watched the whole thing when they fixed mine, and it's actually quite interesting how these sensors integrate with the car's systems.

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! Yes, my auto headlights are exactly like you described, they work sometimes and then out of nowhere stop working. It's really frustrating, especially when driving at sunset. I'll definitely get it checked out this week. Good to know it's likely just the sensor and not something more serious. The fact that your issues started around the same mileage as mine makes me feel better about the situation. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll probably have my regular workshop look at it tomorrow, they know their way around BMWs pretty well. Would love to hear more about the repair process when I get confirmation about what's wrong. Will keep you posted on what they find! Thanks again for all your help! It's great to get advice from someone who's been through the same thing.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 5 Series last year. I've got some experience working on cars, though I usually leave the complex stuff to professionals. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, turned out to be bubbles forming under the gel pad of the windshield sensor. My local workshop replaced the rain-light sensor unit, and everything went back to normal. The whole thing cost me 62 Euro and took about an hour to fix. Before I share more details, could you tell us: Have you noticed any condensation near the sensor area? Did these issues start suddenly or gradually? Are you getting any specific error codes? Just want to make sure we're dealing with the same problem before giving more specific advice. I learned quite a bit about these sensors during my repair saga with my 5 Series (and previously owned a 3 Series), so happy to help troubleshoot!
