BMW 8 Coolant Warning Signals: Owner Seeks Guidance

Hi everyone! Having some concerns with my 2019 BMW 8 (85,977 KM, gasoline engine). The coolant temp warning and check engine light are both on, and there's an error code stored. Pretty sure it's related to low coolant, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their BMW 8? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and if you can recommend how to handle this. Did it turn out to be just low coolant or something more serious? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Had the same issue with my 2016 BMW M6 last month. The coolant temp warning and check engine combo can be tricky. In my case, it turned out the coolant level sensor connector was corroded and making poor contact. The mechanic found that moisture had gotten into the wiring harness connecting to the sensor. The repair involved cleaning the connector pins and replacing the damaged part of the wiring harness. While it wasn't a major mechanical problem, it needed immediate attention to prevent engine overheating. The garage also did a pressure test on the cooling system to make sure there weren't any leaks. If your coolant is actually low, there's likely a leak somewhere in the system. Don't drive it too much until you get it checked out. These symptoms shouldn't be ignored, as they can lead to serious engine damage if left unattended. I'd suggest taking it to a BMW specialist who can properly diagnose the issue. My experience taught me that these warning combinations often need more than just topping up the coolant. Hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful information. Had a similar situation with my sensor connector too. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much they charged you for the repair? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Mine's been fixed for a couple weeks now but I'm still a bit paranoid about every little noise I hear.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely! After I got my M6 fixed, it's been running like a dream, no more warning lights or temperature issues. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing that pesky cable connection problem, and they sorted out the low coolant level while they were at it. Pretty reasonable, if you ask me! Don't worry too much about being paranoid, I was the same way for the first few weeks after getting it fixed! Kept checking the dashboard like a hawk, but eventually realized everything was truly sorted. These BMWs are pretty robust once you get the initial issue fixed properly. If you're still hearing noises that worry you, it might be worth getting it checked just for peace of mind. But honestly, from my experience, once they fix that sensor connector issue properly, it tends to stay fixed. Mine's been perfect for over a month now, and the coolant level has stayed exactly where it should be. Let me know if you notice anything else, always happy to compare notes with another BMW owner!

Thanks so much for the reassurance! Yeah, I finally got it sorted at a mechanic. They found a tiny crack in one of the coolant hoses that was causing a slow leak. Ended up costing me about 150 € for the whole fix, more than your sensor issue but still not terrible considering what I was imagining! You know what's funny? I was doing exactly the same thing, checking my dashboard every five minutes like something was going to explode! But it's been running perfectly for a few weeks now. The temperature gauge stays right where it should be, and I haven't seen any warning lights since. The mechanic I found was actually pretty great. They took the time to show me exactly what was wrong and explained everything they were doing. After my previous bad experience, it was such a relief to find someone trustworthy. Think I'll stick with them for future maintenance. Thanks again for helping me through this, really put my mind at ease knowing someone else went through something similar!
